Survey of Student Opinion of Instruction

Beginning with Fall Semester 2011, the Student Opinion of Instruction Survey process is being conducted through a secured, online tool provided by Digital Measures. The tool is directly accessible via a link in Blackboard until Friday, December 2.

Students with valid email addresses should have received an automatic email notification about the availability of the surveys for all their classes. This email instructs students to log into blackboard, where they will be able to access their course responses through the Tools Menu on the left hand side of the page.

survey clip artReminder notices will be generated periodically for students who do not complete surveys for their classes during the survey period. Students will also be notified via email 24 hours before the survey period ends if they have not yet completed their surveys by that time.

Instructors will be able to monitor the number of surveys that are completed while the survey period is open, and can encourage students to fill out the surveys by comparing the survey completions to the number of students who are enrolled in the class. Please visit the Madison College website for more tips on raising response rates.

After final semester grades are due, faculty will be able to access the summarized survey results for their courses through a link provided in Blackboard. The Dean of each Center will also have access to the summarized survey results for courses offered within their Center.

Why are we automating the survey process?

Save Class Time – Faculty can better use class time than administering evaluation during it.

Obtain Timely Feedback – Comments provided through online evaluations are far more thorough than that of paper-based class evaluations and can be easily tabulated.

Improve Timeliness of Evaluation Results – Results of all evaluations are immediate and made available to faculty in a timely fashion.

Save Money, Staff, and Faculty time – Purchasing, distributing, collecting, aggregating and disseminating information not only costs money but also takes up valuable staff time. Because evaluations are done online and in real-time, the automated surveys reduce costs and time.
