Security Services Has New Name

Over the last two years, the Security Services department has taken several steps to become a more professional, full-service Protective Services department.

Public SafetyThe department has received very positive feedback from the college community as it developed full-time positions within the department, established training programs, and lessened its reliance on student officers.

Student officers continue to serve an important role within the department. The department believes strongly in providing Madison College program students opportunities to gain valuable work experience, and will continue to offer these opportunities at its Madison facilities.

The term “security” can carry a negative image with the college community, and is perceived by some as a non-professional, untrained staff. To be consistent with most, if not all, professional proprietary campus/university departments, including those within the Wisconsin Technical College System, we have decided a name change is appropriate.

The department will now be identified as Public Safety Services. We believe this change clearly recognizes the professionalism of the staff and will assist in identifying their role within the campus community and with visitors.

Both the emergency and non-emergency numbers will remain the same.

    Thank you.

    Jim Bottoni
    Chief of Public Safety Services
