PT Faculty – Developing Rubrics

Assessment is the process of measuring a performance, a work project, or learning skills. This process is based on specific standards and criteria, giving feedback to an individual or team, which documents growth and provides directives to improve future performance. Standards and criteria are established and communicated prior to all work performance.

Sample RubricThe College Assessment and Curriculum website has many assessment resources for you. It is recommended that faculty develop rubrics for class assignments so that there is objective grading criteria where all students are graded fairly. Rubrics are an assessment tool that uses a scale or scoring guide with assessment criteria, provides feedback to the student, and objectively displays grading criteria for the student for a specific assignment, project or activity.

The Assessment and Curriculum Blackboard site has wonderful information about rubric including a handout called, “How to Do a Rubric in 10 Steps”. To access this information, at the Assessment and Curriculum Resources Blackboard site, click on Workshop Materials, Rubrics Workshop, Rubrics Handout.  There are even samples templates to fill in. All part time faculty should have access to the Assessment and Curriculum Blackboard site. If you do not, please contact the HELP desk at (608) 246-6666.

The Faculty Guidebook has an excellent article on the Fundamentals of Rubrics.

For sample rubrics please contact our office, (608) 243-4048 or stop by Room 211, Truax Campus or contact Mary Vlisides, CETL, Room 219 Truax Campus.

This article is brought to you by the Office of Part Time Faculty Support and Services to assist you with your classroom instruction. Enjoy the week!
