Improving Safety by Removing Devices That Pose a Fire Risk

As Facilities staff has been touring buildings this semester, it has been observed that non-code compliant devices have been finding their way back into office spaces. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all new and existing staff that there are extensive code and fire safety requirements regulating the types and use of electrical cords and small appliances in public buildings.

fire hazard warning labelAs a reference, the following is a list of commonly found non-compliant devices:
    -
Electrical appliances such as microwaves, popcorn poppers, coffee machines, refrigerators and hot plates
    -Non-district supplied light lamps
-All extension cords when used as a permanent rather than a temporary solution
    -Power strips connected together
    -All space heaters

We especially ask that you remove any and all incandescent, quartz halogen or other high-intensity lighting device not specifically approved by Facilities immediately, as these have a high potential for starting fires.

As we identify potential hazards and non-compliant devices, we will notify the responsible department of such condition(s) and assist when necessary in correcting the condition(s). Corrections may include proper installation of existing non-compliant devices, replacement of existing non-compliant devices with compliant devices, or removal of non-compliant devices. Devices that possess an imminent threat shall be disposed of without notice.

In the ongoing effort to be code compliant and maintain a safe work environment, we encourage you to assist us in identifying and correcting non-compliant situations by reporting them to the wmarquardt[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (Facilities Services Office) at
    (608) 243-4040.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter,

    Facility Services
