Daylight Savings Time 2007
Technology Services Alert: Action Required
Daylight Saving Time Change – Impact to PDA Users
This bulletin only pertains to users that synchronize their PDA calendar with GroupWise.
This is the third bulletin on the impact of the new Daylight Saving Time rules on electronic calendaring. The first and second bulletins can be found on MATC Matters.
Like all computers that rely upon the correct date and time, your PDA should be “patched” to use the new Daylight Savings Time rules. Until patched, appointments on the PDA may be off by one hour during both the early and late intervals under the new Daylight Savings Time calendar each year. In 2007, the early and late Daylight Savings Time intervals are March 11th-March 31st and October 28th-November 3rd, respectively.
Unfortunately, the PDA patching process is prone to error. For this reason, the Help Desk will assist with the application of these patches.
Technology Services recommends that you do the following:
- Do not attempt to fix PDA calendaring issues earlier than March 11th and until you know that every PC you use to synchronize is patched and your GroupWise calendar is correct.
- Do not use your PDA to schedule or modify appointments during either the early or late Daylight Savings Time intervals until it is patched. Continued synchronization with GroupWise is acceptable, but you should not create, modify, or correct any appointments on the PDA. Until patched, be prepared to ignore some appointment times as indicated on your PDA and use your GroupWise calendar as the authoritative source for your schedule.
- Make an appointment with the Technology Services Help Desk at 6666 to assist you with patching your PDA. Due to the anticipated volume of requests there may be a considerable lag time for these appointments. Regardless of the ultimate date for your appointment, we recommend that you use this service to avoid problems in October. The patching process will take, on average, about 30 minutes. Consequently, the Help Desk can only provide this patching assistance by appointment.
Please also be advised that:
These patches will need to be reapplied if you ever need to reset your PDA to its factory default settings (i.e. a “hard reset”).
You cannot avoid patching by purchasing a new PDA. New PDAs will likely require patching until Congress addresses whether or not the new Daylight Savings Time rules will become permanent.
If the PDA is not a critical tool for you, a very reasonable option is to stop using your PDA until April 1st. It is still recommended that you eventually patch your PDA to avoid this problem in October.
