Technology Services Alert: Action Required
Daylight Saving Time Change
– Fixing Your GroupWise Calendar

This is the fourth bulletin on the impact of the new Daylight Saving Time rules on electronic calendaring. It is recommended that you print this bulletin.

This bulletin describes how to fix your GroupWise calendar once your computer is patched. Please understand that there is no “technology fix” that can completely eliminate calendaring problems related to Daylight Savings Time rule change. It is your responsibility to identify any appointments that are incorrectly scheduled on your calendar and ensure that they are fixed. If necessary, please refer to earlier bulletins and the Technology Services Daylight Savings Time web page for background and instructions related to patching your computer.

If you have a need to call the Help Desk for any reason, please understand that call volume will be high and that staff are working diligently to address all customer problems. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.

An overview of the process to fix your electronic calendar is as follows:

The following paragraphs describe each of the above steps in detail.

Ensure your computer is patched

On an MATC Windows-based desktop or laptop computer, you should see an icon on your desktop indicating “Daylight Savings Time 2007 Enabled” when you login to the network. This icon indicates that Daylight Savings Time patches have been applied. A computer that is not managed by Technology Services will not have this icon. If your MATC computer is not patched, call the Help Desk at 6666 and do not attempt to fix your calendar or schedule new appointments.

Ensure that your computer’s time is correct

On any computer that has been patched successfully, the clock should correctly “spring forward” without a manual time change. Manually changing the system time will not correct the Daylight Savings Time rules. If the time on your computer is correct and did not need a manual time change, your computer patch worked. If your MATC computer did not “spring forward”, call the Help Desk at 6666 and do not attempt to fix your calendar or schedule new appointments. If your personally owned computer did not “spring forward”, please consult the Technology Services Daylight Savings Time web page for links to manufacturer support sites that can assist you in patching your computer and do not attempt to fix your calendar or schedule new appointments.

Review all your appointments scheduled from 3/11/2007–3/31/07 and 10/28/07—11/03/07

It is likely that most appointments will appear at the correct time. Technology Services has run a system wide GroupWise utility to fix many appointments. Appointments fixed by this utility are listed in a new folder in your GroupWise file cabinet titled “TZChange2007 adjusted”. Appointments unchanged by this utility are listed in the file cabinet “TZChange 2007 not adjusted”.

It is your responsibility to identify and adjust any appointments that are incorrectly scheduled on your calendar.

To Adjust a Posted Appointment.
Drag and drop the appointment to the new time.
or
Open the appointment, modify the time, then click Post.

To Adjust a Sent Appointment

Select the appointment. Choose the Resend menu option. Modify the time (and other changes if desired) then click Send. Choose Yes to retract.

To Adjust a Received Appointment

Contact the event organizer and ask them to adjust and resent the item.

If you have a PDA, make an appointment to have it patched

Make an appointment with the Technology Services Help Desk at 6666 to assist you with patching your PDA. Due to the anticipated volume of requests there may be a considerable lag time for these appointments. Regardless of the ultimate date for your appointment, we recommend that you use this service to avoid problems at the change from Daylight Savings Time in October. The patching process will take, on average, about 30 minutes. Consequently, the Help Desk can only provide this patching assistance by appointment.

Please also be advised that:

PDA patches will need to be reapplied if you ever need to reset your PDA to its factory default settings (i.e. a “hard reset”).
You cannot avoid patching by purchasing a new PDA. New PDAs will likely require patching until Congress addresses whether or not the new Daylight Savings Time rules will become permanent.
If the PDA is not a critical tool for you, a very reasonable option is to stop using your PDA until April 1st. It is still recommended that you eventually patch your PDA to avoid this problem in October.
