Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Student Activities Fee?

A segregated fee is charged to all students enrolling in post-high school, degree-credit courses at Madison locations. This fee funds three budgets.

  1. The Co-Curricular Activity budget
  2. The Fitness Center budget
  3. The Metro Bus Pass budget

Who pays the fee?

All students enrolling in post high school credit courses at Madison locations. Students at MATC’s regional campuses are not assessed this fee, but may pay an alternate fee if they wish to recieve certain services.

How much is the fee?

The fee is calculated on the basis of 6.5% of the current state-mandated per credit associated degree tuition for the funding of co-curricular activities, programs, and services. An additional $3.15 per credit supplement is assessed on top of the co-curricular activity fee for the Madison Metro Bus Service ($2.15 per credit) and for the Fitness Center ($1.00 per credit) agreement.

Who allocates the funds?

The Student Activities Board (SAB) allocates all of the funds received from the fee. The SAB shall be responsible for the disposition of the student activity and incidental fees as per college policy and in accordance with Wisconsin state statute 38.145(9). The Student Activities Board is comprised of eight student representatives from the various fund organizations and is co-chaired by the Student Senate president and the Executive Dean of Student Development and Success.

Following the budget development process, the budgets are submitted to the Student Senate for a vote of the full senate with recommendation to the District Board for action. The District Board approves all fees and budgets.

What are the funding sources?

The Student Activity Board budget and other funding revenues are generated from three sources.

  1. Student Activity Fees
  2. Vending machine revenues. (The SAB receives a percentage from all proceeds generated by vending machines at the Madison campuses.)
  3. Interest earned from SAB funds.
