MESA Green Thursdays Film Series
This academic year, the MESA Sustainability Council is offering current, award-winning sustainability-focused films to our students for free on three campuses – Truax, Downtown and West. This series is sponsored by The Natural Step Monona's Green Tuesdays and Thursdays Films & Lectures.
FRESH: Downtown, Feb. 9, 11:30 a.m., Room D240
"Fresh" (film) celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. "Fresh" features Milwaukee’s urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award. http://www.freshthemovie.com/
HOMO TOXICUS: West, March 8, 11:30 a.m., Room 110
Tons of chemicals are released into the environment everyday. The majority of the 100,000 industrial compounds developed since World War II have never been tested for the type of consistent, low-level exposure we experience. Homo Toxicus explores the myriad links between these toxic substances and increasing health problems such as cancer, allergies, hyperactivity, and infertility and the inconsistent standards used for evaluation and regulation of chemical agents. http://www.homotoxicus.com/
CARBON NATION & FOR THE PRICE OF A CUP OF COFFEE: West, April 12, 11:30 a.m., Room 110
“Carbon Nation” is a business film, a national defense film, an energy-reduction film. The heroes in the film are pragmatists. Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don't buy it at all, this is still a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how solutions to climate change also address other social, economic, and national security issues. http://www.carbonnationmovie.com/
"For the Price of a Cup of Coffee" is a 15-minute documentary examining the life cycle of a paper cup and the repercussions of a society reliant on convenience. Why are fewer than 1% of coffeeshop patrons bringing their own cups? Why do we have so much garbage, and where does it go? What is the true cost of a disposable culture?
WASTE LAND: Truax, May 10, 11:30 a.m., Mitby Theater
Filmed over nearly three years, the Academy Award-nominated film “Waste Land” follows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The film offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. www.wastelandmovie.com/
