Here’s a heartwarming story about a holiday project that turned into a labor of love!
While cleaning her grandparent’s home, Madison College employee Ellen Hustad discovered an old pillowcase tucked in a closet. It was full of hundreds of fascinating letters written by her father, who served in the Army during World War II. The letters included notes about his harrowing service in Europe, which included the bloody Battle of Monte Cassino near Rome.
Ellen decided to transcribe the letters into a binder book for a special Christmas gift to her sister and brothers. The book turned out to be nearly 300 pages long! As Ellen was putting the book together, she realized the letters revealed a part of her father she had never known (he died when she was just 13-years-old).
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Channel 15 (WMTV-TV) and WTDY Radio interviewed Ellen about her book.
It's a wonderful holiday story!
