About
The Technical Diploma Printing program offers the knowledge and skills required for an entry level position in the graphic arts industry. Students receive training in all steps of sheetfed offset lithographic reproduction. Additional on-the-job training will be necessary. Technological advances are changing the production procedures, making employee retraining critical. Completion of this one-year Technical Diploma is equivalent to finishing the first year of the Associate Degree Printing and Publishing program. After completion, students may want to consider taking selected second-year courses.
This growing industry is ranked among he top five in the nation today. Plants ranging from small shops to those employing thousands of workers are located in communities of all sizes throughout the country. They manufacture a wide array of products including books, brochures, advertising magazines, newspapers and packaging, People in this field must adapt to technological changes. Positions call for a wide range of skills and aptitudes.
The successful employee will be a detail-oriented problem solving team player with good communication skills. These jobs can require mechanicaly ability and hand-eye coordination. Graduates can specialize in one area after graduation.
Admissions
Requirements for Program Application
The following is required to process your application:
- High School transcript - or
- Completed COMPASS - or
- HSED/GED Test Scores - or
- College transcript showing an Associate Degree, Bachelor's or higher Degree
Fall 2010
MATC begins collecting applications for the following year's Fall term on September 1st. The Admissions Office will then begin processing those applications on the 3rd Monday in October. (Effective for the fall of 2010).
Program Outcomes
The following have been identified as Program Outcomes for the Printing Program at Madison Area Technical College:
- Plan and produce for single and two offset color printed materials.
- Perform traditional and digital prepress functions necessary to produce proofs and plates in an electronic/film based/computer-to-plate work environment for single and two offset color printed materials.
- Perform prepress process to position and organize elements for flatwork such as flyers and brochures.
- Setup, operate, and maintain various offset printing presses to accomplish single and two offset color work.
- Setup, operate, and maintain various bindery and finishing equipment relative to custom orders.
- Work as a cooperative team member.
- Demonstrate reliable and ethical behavior including, but not limited to, assuming responsibility for decisions, actions, professional growth, and displaying initiative and time management skills.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal communications to customers, coworkers and supervisors.
Employment
A grade of "C" or higher is required for all core (program specific) courses to graduate.

Calculates costs and prepares accounts for billing. - Electronic Prepress Technician
Lays out jobs on computer and generates film for production. - Proofer
Exposes and assembles proofs. - Platemaker
Imposes plates to run on press. - Press Operator
Sets up and operates sheet-fed presses. - Finishing Operator
Sets up and operates a variety of bindery and finishing equipment. - Distribution Technician
Sorts, prepares and/or delivers finished product.
