    About

    This program is approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (5600 N River Road, Suite 720; Rosemont, IL 60018; 773-714-8880). A combination of fundamental laboratory techniques and clinical experience prepares graduates for work in laboratories serving the health care sector. The final semester of training is in laboratories in Madison and throughout Wisconsin. Students should anticipate the possibility of traveling or relocating to complete the clinical rotation. A list of laboratories used is available in the program director’s office. Students are admitted for the fall semester.

    Graduates of the program qualify for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Certification Exam for MLT(ASCP).

    Requirements for Program Application

    The following is required to process your application:

    • Official High School transcripts OR official HSED/GED transcripts (this requirement is waived for applicants who have transcripts on file documenting the achievement of an Associate Degree or higher from an institution other than Madison College)
    • COMPASS, ASSET, ACT or SAT test scores

    Madison College begins collecting applications for the following year's fall semester on September 1, 2011. For this program applications and credentials must be received by July 1, 2012, to be considered for the fall semester.

    Program Outcomes: 

    A student who graduates from the program will be able to:

    1. Collect, process and preserve blood and other body fluid samples.
    2. Perform and report laboratory tests in a variety of laboratory settings.
    3. Operate laboratory equipment and instruments, performing preventive and corrective maintenance as required.
    4. Identify pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical variables that affect procedures, instruments and results, and take appropriate corrective action.
    5. Perform mathematical functions as required by laboratory procedures.
    6. Perform and monitor quality assurance and quality control techniques.
    7. Practice laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
    8. Perform information processing functions in the clinical laboratory.
    9. Apply laboratory results to diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions and/or diseases.
    10. Communicate with colleagues and patients in a professional manner.

    Employment

    Career Potential: 
    • Medical Laboratory Technician - Performs routine laboratory tests on blood, urine, and body fluids to help in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury in a hospital, clinic laboratory, or reference laboratory.
    • Laboratory Technician/Research Assistant - Performs routine and special laboratory tests in a variety of laboratory settings, including research, industrial, environmental and food science labs.

    Additional Info

    Madison College offers its medical lab training in two formats, the regular 2-year, 5-semester program and an accelerated Medical Laboratory Technician program.  The Accelerated program begins early August and concludes by the end of the following June.  Successful students have all the required general education support classes completed prior to beginning the accelerated core classes.  The Accelerated curriculum is offered online.  Students come to campus Thursday evenings and every other Saturday to complete the labs for this Medical Laboratory program.  Take the Accelerated Learning Survey (PDF 46.39KB) to see if the accelerated format is for you.

    Physical exam with a completed Health History Form on file prior to beginning the first semester clinical rotation.
