    Telepresence Tutoring

If you can come to a Madison College regional campus during normal business hours, but not when a tutor is available on your closest campus, try connecting with the Writing Center in a Telepresence tutoring session.

    What's it like?

Telepresence is a web-conferencing system that allows people in two locations to communicate in such a realistic way that it feels as if everyone is in the same room. In each Telepresence room is a computer, high definition document camera, and large monitors. One small Telepresence room is located at each regional campus for tutoring; you can view the location of your nearest Telepresence room here.

Telepresence tutoring is very similar to face-to-face tutoring; it's just that your tutor appears on a screen instead of next to you. For additional information about using Telepresence, please visit the college's Telepresence web pages.

    When can I get help?

Telepresence tutors are available five days a week.  While the tutor on call may be able to schedule an appointment outside the times given, the following are hours when the tutor can guarantee availability.  It's important to allow at least two work days to set up the appointment and reserve the Telepresence rooms.  (For example, if you call on a Wedensday, the earliest we can guarantee you a spot is on Friday.)

    Monday       11:00 -  5:00

    Tuesday      9:00 - 2:00

    Wednesday 9:00 - 3:00

    Thursday     10:00 - 4:00

    Friday           8:30 - 11:00

How do I make an appointment?

Email or call the Writing Center Assistant Director, kbouman[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (subject: telepresence) (Kurt Bouman) to schedule a time with your tutor.  In your email, please specify what day you'd like to "meet" with the tutor, since this determines who is assigned to your session.  You should receive a confirmation email from your tutor within a day.  Your tutor will take care of scheduling the room.  All you need to do is arrive on time for your appointment (the door may relock if you're late), bring all your assignment information, and prepare to work together just as if you're in the same room.  For tips on using Telepresence, please download this tip sheet (DOC, 37KB).
