Cabinetmaking and Millwork Frequently Asked Questions

At this point, you can only start the Cabinetmaking program in the fall semester.

A waitlist can form for this program, so the year you start depends on when you applied and the status of the waitlist.

At this time, the Cabinetmaking and Millwork program accepts students for starting in the fall semester only. You can apply as early as September 1 for the following year’s fall admittance

The only admissions requirement is that you have a high school diploma, HSED, or GED.

A waitlist always forms for this program, so the earlier you apply the better.

Even if you are initially placed on a waitlist, you may be able to take the spot of someone who decides not to attend.

Last year, all students who started the program had application complete dates of mid-December or earlier. Some of these students had initially been placed on the waitlist, and were admitted when someone before them decided not to attend.

Students with application complete dates of mid-December or later had one full year on the waitlist before they could start the Cabinetmaking and Millwork classes.

It is a one-year technical diploma.

The course will take you one year to complete when you take all classes each semester in sequence.

Students go full-time to day classes (typically 7:30 am -2:30 pm, M-TH, and 7:30-11:30 on Friday) for two semesters.

All classes are held at the Madison Truax campus.

The only two classes you can take before entering the program that satisfy graduation requirements are Vocational Mathematics 1 (31-804-379) and Communications 1 (31-801-356)

If you would like an introduction to woodworking techniques, Madison College offers some non-degree evening courses in this area. These courses can help you learn basic techniques. They will not, however, meet graduation requirements. You can look at our non-degree woodworking course schedules (PDF) online.

Because this program always has a waitlist, Cabinetmaking and Millwork classes are full to capacity with program students. As a result, you typically cannot register for our program classes that take place in the lab before being admitted into the program. If there is space in a classroom-based course, you may be able to get special permission from the instructor to take the course.
