    Listed below are all of the components for Peer Tutor Training.

    Orientation/Interview  

    (30 Minutes) During the orientation and interview session with the Peer Tutor Coordinator, the basic tutor responsibilities, training requirements and hiring documentation are covered. Your previous tutoring experience, interest in helping others and academics will also be discussed. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about our program.

    Initial Training Session  

    (4 Hours - Paid) The essentials of the Madison College tutoring program, tutor responsibilities, tutoring do’s and don’ts, learning strategies, listening skills, critical thinking, ethics and many other topics are covered in this session.  Although this is a mandatory session, tutoring is allowed prior to completion.  Contact the Tutoring office for the next available sessions.

    FERPA Tutorial Quiz

    (1 Hour – Paid) Every peer tutor is required to review the online FERPA tutorial on confidentiality and take the accompanying quiz.

    NCSU A Look At Productive Tutoring Techniques  

    (3-4 Hours – Paid) Peer Tutors may check out this DVD and view the 8 modules which show actual tutoring sessions. Upon completion of the accompanying assignments, tutors will be paid for their time.

    In-Service Training  

    (2-4 Hours – Paid) Each semester at least 2 one-hour in-service trainings are offered on topics of interest to peer tutors.  Presented by faculty, topics have included Helping Students Become Better Writers, Working with Students Who Have Disabilities, ESL (English as a Second Language) Tutees and Tutoring Students in Math.  Schedules of in-services will be posted in tutoring centers and communicated to tutors via email.
