
Peer Tutor Job Description
Qualifications

Competency in the courses to be tutored, demonstrated by a final grade of B or better

Comfort level with the subject matter

A letter of recommendation from an Madison College instructor

A desire to help and encourage students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, academic ability, and ages
Responsibilities
- Help students enhance their mastery of concepts and academic skills in specific subject areas
- Coach tutees in study skills, note taking, organization and time management
- Be a source of encouragement and support
- Comply with the Madison College Student Code of Conduct and the National Tutoring Association Code of Ethics
- Exhibit professional behavior at all times
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions for payroll and program requirements
Tutoring Settings/Time Commitment
- Walk-in: Tutors placed in centers like the Truax Math Center, Accounting Lab, and Learning Centers across the district are scheduled for regular weekly hours in shifts of two hours or more.
- Small Group: Regularly scheduled tutoring sessions are set up for selected classes for 3-4 hours per week.
- One-on-one: Tutors and students schedule mutually agreed upon days/times for on campus tutoring sessions.
- Tutors may work 1-19 hours per week (based on type of position, demand for services and personal schedule).
Compensation/Benefits
- $9.00 per hour salary

Training
- Orientation (30 min) - scheduled with coordinator
- Initial training session (4 hours) - scheduled with coordinator
- Online DVDs and assignments (2-3 hours) - through Blackboard, after initial training is completed
- FERPA tutorial on maintaining confidentiality (30 min) - must be done prior to tutoring
- In-service training sessions each semester (1 hour per session)
- Tutoring may be allowed prior to completion of training (FERPA excepted)
