Peace Park Proposal

    Printer-friendly version

On November 19, 2010, the Student Activities Board (SAB) formed a committee of students to work with Robert Corbett, a faculty member from the Architectural Technology Program, to research and gather input on the possibility of constructing an outdoor student and community space as part of the Facility Master Plan at Madison College. This space, which has been nicknamed the Peace Park, would serve as a quiet, peaceful place for students, faculty, staff and the Madison community to gather on the Truax Campus. This page is intended to provide information regarding the Peace Park concept.

The Peace Park Committee wants your feedback to determine the need and feasibility of constructing a Peace Park at the Madison College Truax Campus.  Click here to take the survey.

    Current Concept

The current concept calls for a large surfaced area to be enclosed by a slightly elevated berm, trees and 16-foot steel structures resembling the seven continents on earth. At the center of the large surfaced area, a three-dimensional globe will be positioned so that each corresponding 16-foot continent is aligned with its appropriate location on the globe. The large continents give visitors a feeling that they are fully enclosed by the park, and in a metaphoric sense, the earth.

    Proposed Location

The current proposal calls for the Peace Park to be located on the southwest end of the Madison College Truax Campus, located on 3550 Anderson Street in Madison, WI.  The park would be located adjacent to the bike path connecting the campus to the Carpenter-Ridgeway neighborhood, the Robin Roberts Baseball Field and the overflow student parking lot. North of the proposed location, across Anderson Street, the Facilities Master Plan calls for the construction of a Health Sciences building.
