    Program Overview

In this exciting program, students will travel to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s Marine Laboratory near Colon, Panama for a 9-day program of environmental science.  Course curriculum will be adapted to this special site, which offers an amazing mix of human impacts on mangrove forests and coral reefs, along with traditional environmental problems, such as water quality, air quality, handling of wastewater, municipal solid waste disposal, land use conflicts, transportation problems, over-extraction of resources, high-density human populations, and poverty.

Other locations will include a day trip to the Smithsonian-operated Barro Colorado Natural Monument—a research island in the middle of the Panama Canal, and a visit to the San Blas Archipelago, which is controlled by the indigenous Kuna Yala tribe.

Students will gain real-world, eye-opening experience engaging environmental problems in a developing country. Students from Madison College will interact with local officials, researchers, fishermen, indigenous people and other citizens as well as with students from Universidad de Panama, who will be joining the course.  The Smithsonian Institution will provide language interpreters during the program.

    Course Information:

Students will earn Madison College credit for an Environmental Science Field Lab. This education abroad program fulfills the lab portion for Environmental Science (course 20-806-286).  All student contact hours for the laboratory component of the course will occur during spring break.  The lecture portion of the course may be completed either face-to-face, or online, during spring semester 2012.

Environmental Science is a 4-credit, introductory college transfer course that satisfies the biological lab science requirement for university transfer.  This 4-credit course is offered at the introductory level; anyone interested can apply.
