The third annual Black Women's Business Expo and Job Fair is set for Saturday, Oct. 31,
8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center. The theme will be "Your Future Begins Today!"
There are multiple local business expos and job fairs available to people who want and need them, but this is the only event in the area that is specifically geared toward African-American women. The Genesis Enterprise Center is once again proudly sponsoring the event.
"We are going to focus on issues that face Black women, so we will be dealing with health, financial, employment, and many other important issues" says Dr. Richard Harris, president and CEO of the Genesis Enterprise Center (GEC) a collaborative effort to create an institution for economic empowerment on the city's south side.
The expo is a great place for Black women to discuss employment-related issues that are particularly relevant to their needs and interests. Harris stresses that this event is geared towards women of all ages. "Last year, we had women from ages 16 to 69 at the expo," Harris said. "So, really, this is an event that is for women from any stage in their lives. Our goals are to provide awareness to women on so many important issues."
The expo will place an emphasis on topics including education, entrepreneurship, finance, health, community leadership, and religion. Harris is encouraging single mothers and young women to come, but maintains that this is an event aimed at all African-American women in the Madison area.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Deryl Fulmer, MATC's associate vice president for Learner Success. Fulmer is the former interim dean of liberal arts and sciences at Milwaukee Area Technical College. She has an extensive background in urban adult education, developing and managing diversity, affirmative action, leadership, and change management training programs.
The Black Women’s Business Expo offers an incredible networking opportunity for Black women seeking employment. Last year, Black Women's Business Expo and Job Fair had over 200 people attend the event. "For our first two expos, we've had 30 women get full or part-time jobs," Harris says. "So people should bring resumes and be prepared to talk to employers."
The presenters will include two physicians from Milwaukee talking about a variety of health-related topics. Jaimes Johnson of the UW Credit Union will be leading a discussion and Maya Johnson-Brown, a social worker in Dane County, will deliver a presentation titled “How to dress for the interview.”
The event will feature job fair human resources representatives from a variety of Madison-area companies both big and small.
Harris, whose Genesis Development Corp. provides jobs and gives access to resources that will help minorities start their own businesses, said the event is about making the minority community less dependent and more independent. He hopes the job fair and expo will provide not only knowledge, but also important connections and networks for Black women.
"Our overall goal —the reason we started this two years ago — was to focus on the needs of Black women in the areas we feel impact them the most ... That includes education, financial information, health, and general career and employment information," Harris says. "The first two fairs have been everything I have hoped for and even more and we want to continue to build on those with our third fair. We're very excited about it."
The third annual Black Women's Business Expo and Job Fair is set for Saturday, Oct. 31, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel, 706 John Nolen Drive. Ticket price includes breakfast and lunch. Tickets can be purchased at the Genesis Enterprise Center, 313 W. Beltline Highway. For more information, call 255-5842.
