The Mitby Theater will be Madison’s swingingest spot when the United States Coast Guard Band takes the stage. You can expect to hear a great mix of music from composers like Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, John Williams and John Phillip Sousa. If you need a little more swing in your step, the Dixieland Jazz Band, a four-member ensemble within the Coast Guard Band organized to perform classic jazz, blues, and rags with a “New Orleans” flavor, will be just what you’ve been waiting for. 

For Wisconsin band members Amanda Baker of Germantown, Andrew Sherwood of Milwaukee, and Joel Flunker of Neenah, this concert will their first trip with the band to their home state.

Representing the United States Coast Guard, the nation’s oldest continuous seagoing service, this 55-member premier band is based at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The band has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the nation, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. Additionally, it has participated in such historic events as the American Bicentennial, World War II Fiftieth Anniversary events in England, and inaugural celebrations for every President since Herbert Hoover. It was the first American military band to perform in the former Soviet Union, with concerts in Leningrad and the surrounding area in 1989. In 2008, it became the first premier American military band to perform a concert tour of Japan.
