Safety Precautions
Prevent the Temptation of Theft
Do not leave your purses, wallets, backpacks, and other personal belongings
unattended for even a few minutes. Most thefts occur in a matter of
seconds!
Avoid leaving expensive items in plain sight in your car such as CD
players and cell phones. Do not leave valuables in lockers. Due to previous thefts in the athletic
locker rooms (cut locks), we recommend that you do not leave valuables
such as wallets jewelry, keys, etc in lockers.
Avoid carrying large sums of cash with you. There is an ATM machine
located next to the cafeteria for your use.
Safety Tips for Walking Out to Parking Lots
We encourage you to use the "buddy system" when walking out
to your vehicle in the parking lots (especially during evening hours),
or at least try to walk out at the same time as others.
Take the parking
shuttle van to your car at the Truax Campus. The MATC van leaves
from the Mitby Theatre entrance every half hour beginning at 6:30 pm
until 10:30 pm, from November through March. It is clearly
identified with amber flashing lights and a shuttle sign in the window.
Remember to stay alert to your surroundings at all times!
Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety Alert
Wright St., Anderson St. and Hoffman St. are very congested with traffic
as well as the many students, staff and visitors using the crosswalks
in these areas. We are asking that drivers please slow down and give
consideration to the safety of pedestrians in the crosswalks. Make
your pledge today to be a pacer, not a racer!
Panhandling Complaints
In the past we have received complaints regarding panhandlers asking
for money in the Wright Street median crosswalk area by MATC during
day and evening hours. Since they are not on MATC property and panhandling
is legal in public places unless it is malice panhandling (City Ordinance
#24.12 Menacing or Aggressive Panhandling Prohibited), we are working
with Madison Police regarding complaints and concerns.
In cooperation with the Madison Police, we are asking that anyone having
contact with panhandlers and feel threatened or intimidated in any way
should report it directly to Madison Police and contact
the MATC Security Office, Room 129G (608) 243-4357.
