Rocio Martinez, Counselor

I am a professional counselor and a mediation specialist for the MATC Counseling and Conflict Management Services. I hold a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Master of Science degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I was an Assistant Dean of Students at Purdue University for eight years. In that capacity, I administered and supervised the special support services for minority students on campus. While working as a pre-doctoral psychology intern for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Counseling and Consultation Services, I provided crisis assessment and intervention services as a member of the Crisis Response Team. As part of the MATC Conflict Management Services program and as a certified instructor for Non-violent Crisis Prevention Intervention by the Crisis Prevention Institute, I provide crisis management interventions.

I have been an active member of the MATC Intercultural Council and presenter on diversity issues campus wide. Currently, I advise two student organizations on campus, the Phi Theta Kappa, International Honor Society, and Latino Pride/ “Orgullo Latino” (in progress).

I co-teach College Success, which includes a set of strategies for creating success in college and in life. In addition, I teach Diversity in Education to faculty/staff for their certification. I also co-facilitate a support group for the National Science Foundation, which supports women in technology-related fields. In 2004, I completed the Community College Student Services Leadership Institute for the National Council on Student Development (NCSD). I was nominated and awarded the 2004 MATC Outstanding Employee of the year award.

I was born and reared in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Part of my family migrated from Italy to Venezuela and then to Puerto Rico. My mother was a flamenco dance teacher, and we had a dance studio in the home where I grew up. I was reared among music and political discussions regarding the Puerto Rican political status since my grandmother, who lived with us, was a journalist and an active member of a political party.

If you seek counseling from me, I will work with you to facilitate self-growth, personal satisfaction through emotional connections, self-definition, and personal empowerment during these significant years of your life. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to serve your needs!

My counseling psychology expertise includes interpersonal relationships, family issues, adjustment concerns, empowerment/assertiveness issues, self-esteem and body image concerns, multiple demands while attending school, bilingual/international student adjustment, adult returning students, under-prepared student concerns, crisis intervention, and career transition issues, among others.

Among my quotes on keeping it real:

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else. Judy Garland

Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing. Anonymous

From my MATC Latino students:

Vengo con mi mochila llena de esperanza AND Por mi raza hablara el espiritu.
