Geraldo VilaCruz, Counselor
In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. Unknown
My name is Geraldo VilaCruz, and I have been a counselor here at MATC since August of 2000. My main goal is to help you, the student, reach your educational, career and personal goals through your experience here at MATC.
In my own experience, I have found that what affects each student's ability to achieve his or her goals and dreams usually occurs outside the classroom. I like to get students to explore how they manage their own thoughts, feelings, and actions and how they manage the various roles played in life such as worker, student, boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, parent, and family member.
I enjoy working with students to fuel their own internal fire of self-motivation, belief in themselves, and ability to take charge of their lives. I do this through one on one and group counseling sessions through our Counseling Center and through teaching College Success courses. Additionally, I love to work with students through workshops such as “Seven Habits for Effective College Students.”
I have a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the UW-Madison and a Bachelor in Social Work from UW-Oshkosh. I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist and Independent Clinical Social Worker and I have extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and families struggling with emotional, behavioral, and relationship issues.
So, if you are experiencing any distress in your life that is affecting your ability to achieve your goals and dreams here at MATC, come and see me and/or any of the other counselors.
A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.
