A paralegal or legal assistant is a person qualified by education, training, or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity to perform specifically-designated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. Paralegals are not authorized to practice law. The Post-baccalaureate Certificate in paralegal is appropriate for those persons who already have earned a bachelor’s degree.
Paralegal Post Baccalaureate Certificate completers will be able to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Work collaboratively while demonstrating individual initiative and responsibility.
- Make ethical decisions in a legal environment.
- Use critical thinking skills to solve problems in a legal environment.
- Use legal terminology effectively.
- Effectively organize legal information.
- Provide assistance to lawyers by performing delegated legal work in various fields of law.
- Conduct accurate, effective and efficient legal research using both traditional and computerized research techniques.
- Generate work product using a variety of computer software applications typical in a modern legal environment.
Admissions Requirements for All Applications Submitted for the Current Academic Year
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution (Transcripts to be submitted with application for admission via the program office.*)
- Ability to use Windows and Word proficiently.
- Attendance at Summer Orientation session.
- Keyboarding speed of 50 WPM with no more than five errors.
*Apply for this certificate directly through the program office. Enrollment through the college and the $30 enrollment fee are NOT required.
