Due to the high demand for broadcast captioners and court reporters, MATC is expanding training for these careers. This program is approved by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).
Broadcast captioners use judicial reporter realtime skills and technology to instantly convert stenographic notes of audio dialog to English text for television display for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Both judicial reporting and broadcast captioning pay very well but demand rigorous training.
Potential judicial reporters and captioners must have:
- exceptional English and keyboarding skills
- a wide ranging knowledge of current events and specialized terminology
- computer technology proficiency
- the ability to meet deadlines and
- the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
Industry experts predict the need for media captioners to escalate. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 required television broadcasters to close caption all live programming by the year 2006. Some 2,000 to 3,000 captioners are needed to meet these broadcast requirements.
Program outcomes state what a graduate needs to be able to do with the essential knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors acquired in a specific MATC program. The program outcomes communicate expectations to students, as well as other academic institutions and potential employers. The identification and assessment of program outcomes support MATC's efforts in documenting student learning and provide a context for the faculty's academic planning.
