Nursing Associate Degree Program

Nursing Associate Degree - LPN Information

Madison Area Technical College and the faculty of the Associate Degree Nursing Program value the education and experience you have obtained as an LPN. As an LPN, you may be able to enter directly into the third semester nursing courses. LPNs enrolling in the third semester nursing courses take Orientation to Associate Degree Nursing (543-164, 1 credit) in addition to the four other third semester nursing courses. If you wish to take part of the first year nursing courses, options are available.

Advanced Standing

Based on education and experience, advanced standing credit for the following nursing courses may be granted:

  • First Semester — Credit for the first semester nursing courses will be granted at the time of admission to the program.
  • Second Semester — Credit for second semester courses will be granted after successful completion of all third semester nursing courses.
Testing and Work Experience Requirements for Advanced Standing

Based on the following requirements, you may be required to take a challenge exam to receive advanced standing.

  • 0-5 years after completion of PN program — No testing required; work experience recommended but not required.
  • 6-11 years after completion of PN program — No testing required if work experience of 1000 hours in a licensed health care facility.
  • Over 11 years after completion of PN program — NLN Mobility Profile Book 1 and work experience of 1000 hours in the last three years in a licensed health care facility are required.
Admission Process

Submit your application according to the guidelines for all students (see Application Packet Checklist and Supplementary Application Information). In addition, you should contact the Health Occupations office at (608) 246-6065 to schedule an appointment with the Program Co-Director for consideration of advanced standing. Upon completion of the application process, qualified applicants will be put on a list for entry into the program.

Prior to enrollment in third semester nursing courses, you must complete all general studies requirements.
