Course Format: 9 days field work plus 8 weeks online.
Field Site: Mastatal, Costa Rica

Instructors: Ken Walz, Chemistry and Engineering Instructor MATC; Jon Christian, Manufacturing and Engineering Instructor, MATC; Ian Woofenden, Renewable Energy Instructor, Solar Energy International.

Costs: Tuition = $394.50; Fees = $1,350.

INCLUDED in the fees:

  • 9 days travel and renewable energy instruction in Mastatal, Costa Rica. (Jan 1-9, 2009)
  • Hands-on instruction and installation of 4 solar electric systems
  • Tours of various renewable energy and sustainability projects in Mastatal
  • Motor coach from Juan Santamaría International Airport (San Jose, Costa Rica) to Mastatal
  • 9 nights dormitory lodging at Rancho Mastatal Environmental Learning and Sustainable Living Center (http://www.ranchomastatal.com)
  • Meals in Mastatal (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Experienced Engineering and Renewable Energy Instructors
  • Spanish Language Translator(s) in Mastatal

Students will help install solar electrical panels.INCLUDED in the tuition:

  • Additional 3-credit, 8-week, online class delivered by MATC (Jan 12 – March 14, 2009)

Expenses NOT included:

  • Airfare to and from San Jose, Costa Rica (students must arrange individually)
  • Optional Travel Insurance
  • International taxes
  • Expenses for optional tours and/or home stays in Costa Rica
  • Incidental/recreational food and drink
  • Personal expenses: laundry, entertainment, souvenirs, etc.
  • Passport expenses  

Registration and Payment Information

Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible, since enrollment is limited. Once the maximum enrollment is reached, additional students cannot be added to the course. You may register for this class through the MATC website (http://matcmadison.edu).

Students will help build solar ovens.Once your registration is complete, you will receive information from the college regarding payment of tuition and fees. Students will be responsible for their own air travel to and from Costa Rica.

Upon registering, you will receive additional travel documentation for the trip to Costa Rica. Students are encouraged to make travel arrangements as soon as possible since airfare costs may increase nearer the date of the trip.  

Additional Requirements and Information

If you don’t have a current passport, please apply for one now.

MATC requires all participants to show proof of health insurance. The policy must include basic health services, emergency medial evacuation, and repatriation of remains abroad. If you do not currently have such insurance, short term polices are available from numerous providers. Two that MATC has used with success in the past are:

TravelGuard, Stevens Point, WI (www.travelguard.com) HTH Worldwide, Radnor, PA (hthtravelinsurance.com) You will be asked to provide photocopies of your passport and insurance policy to the trip leaders.
