Tool and Die
The tool and die apprentice that successfully completes this program will have acquired the entry-level journey skills required by this highly technical industry. This is an intense and fast-paced course that includes both theory and hands-on training, and requires dedication and discipline. The tool and die apprentice will learn the theory and skills to operate all the basic machinery found in a well-equipped tool room, including lathes, drilling machines, metal cutting saws, vertical and horizontal milling machines, and surface and cylindrical grinders. The course covers the theory and hands-on operation of advanced machine tools, such as computer-numerical controlled machining centers and turning centers. Instructors use state-of-the-art equipment to teach computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM). Basic and advanced blueprint reading and sketching is vital to the interpretation of the complex shop prints the apprentice will encounter. The course also covers the advanced theory of plastic mold making, metal stamping dies, and jig and fixture design and construction, in detail. Metallurgical theory and practice will allow the apprentice to select the most appropriate metal for the type of tool or die being constructed. Apprentices will apply industrial mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry, in all units of instruction. The course also teaches apprentices to locate and apply technical data from reference sources.
