Plastics Injection Molding Machine Setter
Plastics injection moding maching set up technicians perform many vital functions in the plastics industry. They install plastic injection molds on the molding machine; make necessary connections of the electrical, hydraulic and cooling systems to the mold; set any hydraulic or mechanical core pulls; establish the ejection mechanism stroke, mold opening and closing speed and clamp pressures; insure that the correct plastic material, plastic melt temperatures, shot size, injection speed and pressures are set; and cycle the machine and adjust the molding parameters until acceptable parts are produced. This highly technical apprenticeship program requires a thorough understanding of the material taught in this program. Units of instruction include an introduction to injection molding, thermoplastic and thermoset plastics; plastic structure and properties; injection mold start up, shut down, and trouble shooting; electricity, hydraulics and pneumatics; statistical process control; plastic mold design and blueprint reading; technical mathematics (including trigonometry); part inspection processes and measuring tools; basic tool room machine shop operations; and an overview of many of the plastic molding processes other than injection molding.
Prospective applicants for apprenticeship may receive information about the different programs and application requirements by contacting the campus administrator/ apprenticeship chairperson at 2125 Commercial Avenue, (608) 246-5200.
