About Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is a training program that combines structured on-the-job training with related instruction. It is sponsored by employers, employer associations, or labor/management groups that can hire and train in a working situation. The employment opportunity is the most basic requirement for an apprenticeship. Without a job there is no "on-the-job training," and such training represents about 90% of the program.

Why Choose Apprenticeship?

  • Apprentices can earn while they learn. They learn a skilled trade while earning a good wage and have a sense of job security.
  • Apprenticeships often serve as an entry point into a career that would otherwise be closed to an individual due to lack of experience.
  • Serving an apprenticeship training enhances economic security for the individual since graduate apprentices are often promoted to supervisory positions.
  • The skills apprentices learn are transferable from one employer to another and generally from one area of the country to another.
