Supplemental Instruction (SI) Services - our job is your grade.
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction is a series of weekly group-study sessions for students taking tough classes. The SI program targets traditionally difficult courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated review sessions that offer students the opportunity to discuss and process course information.
In SI, our focus isn’t high-risk students, but high-risk classes. For this reason, SI is open to all students who want to increase their understanding of course material and improve their grades.
About the SI Sessions
- Attendance is voluntary
- You meet with other students to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying course materials, and test yourselves before the instructor does
- Each session will be guided by an SI leader
About the SI Leaders
- SI leaders are students who have successfully completed the course
- SI leaders know what it takes to get a good grade in the course because they’ve already done it
- SI leaders integrate study skills with course content
- SI leaders are recommended by faculty but are hired, trained, and supervised by the SI program coordinators
SI results and Outcomes
SI improves academic performance (students’ grades) by increasing critical thinking. SI also reduces attrition rates (drops/withdrawals) while increasing persistence towards graduation (returning/graduating students).
What’s in it for you?
If you attend regularly, chances are you’ll earn a better grade, increase your understanding of course content, and develop more effective ways of studying - which will carry over to other classes!
SI is FREE!
- Students participate on a voluntary basis, so you can join a group at any time
- SI is peer-assisted, group study for difficult or “gatekeeper” courses
- SI sessions are open to everyone enrolled in classes supported by SI
