High School Completions Options

National External Diploma Program

General Education Development (GED)

Instruction is provided for individuals preparing to take the GED tests. Instruction and practice tests are provided in five content areas that make up the GED exam: language arts, writing; science; social studies; language arts, reading; mathematics. The standardized GED tests are given on a regularly scheduled basis at sites throughout the MATC District. Applicants for the GED must also participate in career awareness counseling, which includes an assessment of reading skills, an assessment of career interests and aptitudes, and the development of a career plan. A nominal fee is charged for each GED test. View the current testing schedule.

High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)

Individuals who wish to obtain an HSED must pass all the GED requirements and meet requirements in health, civic literacy and employability skills. A nominal fee is charged for each test. View the current testing schedule.

Competency-Based HSED (P.I. 5.09)

This option is targeted for individuals at least 18.5 years of age without a high school credential. The 5.09 HSED option is open to students with limited English proficiency and native English speakers who have a greater chance for success through a competency-based assessment format.

The student develops and maintains a portfolio that includes competency-based assessments. Following successful completion of the competencies, the portfolio is reviewed. If the portfolio meets competency standards, the student is awarded a High School Equivalency Diploma by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Entry into the program is by teacher referral only.

Wisconsin Competency-Based High School Equivalency Diploma (WCBHSED)

This option consists of smaller, sequential sections of the content areas of the HSED, along with a life skills component. Students complete their work in College Preparedness and Academic Advancement Center (CPAAC) classes or learning centers.

External Diploma Program (EDP)

This program allows adults to demonstrate high school-level skills by applying the skills they have learned through their life and/or work experiences. Academic skills, including writing, speaking, computation, problem solving, reading and critical thinking, will be demonstrated by doing real-life tasks, such as researching a major purchase. Adults must also demonstrate an entry-level job skill or home management experience. Upon successful completion of the program, a high school diploma is awarded by a local high school district. A fee is charged for this program.

MATC’s HEP (High School Equivalency Program)

MATC’s HEP (High School Equivalency Program) is a non-residential program that provides instruction and related educational support services, in collaboration with regional campuses, to eligible migrant and seasonal farm workers residing in eligible south central Wisconsin. These services will enable successful participants to obtain a secondary school credential (GED/HSED, or high school diploma) and to obtain career and/or post secondary educational counseling and placement, as appropriate.
