Sewing with Trish Pulvermacher

Trish Pulvermacher is an MATC graduate with an Associate's Degree in Clothing Design, and she currently teaches the ACE sewing related courses. "I love being able to help others achieve confidence in their sewing abilities; it's very rewarding sharing my knowledge with others," Trish said about teaching.

Trish has plenty of sewing experience beyond her twelve years of teaching at MATC. She worked in a fabric store, sold sewing machines, and worked as a sole proprietor of her own custom sewing business, which focuses on bridal work. She was also a presenter on the Wisconsin Public Television special, Quilts of Wisconsin, with Nancy Zieman in August 1996.

Her classes average eleven students, all of whom pick their own projects to work on throughout the semester. Trish teaches with a hands-on method, using samples and demonstrations as well as one-on-one work. Students have told Trish that she is a very patient instructor, which she considers a very important quality. Several of Trish's students have gone on to receive degrees in Fashion Design using the ACE sewing classes as a foundation for their future studies.

With the range of sewing class options from Beginning Sewing to Fitting and Design, students have a choice of deciding how far they would like to progress with their sewing expertise. MATC offers college-level sewing courses, such as the Fitting/Alteration course that Trish teaches. Students make a personal sloper, which is a basic pattern from which other patterns are designed. Next, they develop a "code" that is compared to fashion patterns ensuring the individual a well-fitting garment once completed. Students are then taught basic design from their slopes.

Trish first became interested in sewing when she was a young girl, about seven or eight years old. "My mother used to sew and I used to watch her," Trish explained. Through education and dedication to her craft, Trish has been able to help many students develop wonderful sewing skills.
