WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I'm writing this message from my new (temporary) office at the Downtown Education Center. You can find me in Room D302. The other staff from the Office of the President (Ellen Hustad and Nancy Reinhardt) are located in Room D304.I know this surge is unsettling for many people. Thanks for all the cooperation that we have received from the movers and the "movees." What a great opportunity this gives us to gain a different perspective on the college. I'd like to include a huge thank you to the staff of DoETS and Facilities, as well as the offices that surged this week.
MATC Marvels
Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college. Here are this week's "favorite teachers," as mentioned to me by a former student: Kate Grovergrys, Spanish instructor, and Jody Thrush-Withers, Arts & Sciences dean.Other MATC Marvels
The June issue of Madison Magazine featured our very own Darlene Weisberger in a story called "Threads Of Hope," chronicling breast cancer survivor stories. Darlene works at the Truax Enrollment Center. You can read the article at: http://www.madisonmagazine.com/article.php?section_id=918&xstate=view_story&story_id=201483.I would like to recognize the MATC Team who participated in the Race for the Cure event last Saturday: Sue Carter, Debbie Derr, Pearl Dunn, Ellen Hustad, Marilyn Fayram, Sarah Fowles, Rosanne Glick, Jill Gmeinder and her daughter Kelsey, Carol Kalscheur, Mary Kuhn, Jill Mason, Diana Paynter, Nancy Reinhardt and Nancy Schley.
On Sunday, the Wisconsin State Journal covered the Race for the Cure event and featured a group photo of breast cancer survivors. Our very own Ellen Hustad and Nancy Schley are a pictured in this group photo. My goal for next year's race is to at least double, if not triple, the number of participants in the Race for the Cure event to show our support for this most worthy cause. Keep it in mind for 2006.
Sherry Masters, retired mathematics instructor for 30 years, was also highlighted in Sunday's Wisconsin State Journal in the "Know Your Madisonian" section.
The new PeopleSoft Finance system went live last week - very successfully. Congratulations to everyone who made that happen!
Highlights of my week:
I had the opportunity to listen to the AQIP reports of three work groups and would like to comment on how great a group they are, doing such important work. They show us all what "continuous improvement" is all about. Thanks to all of our AQIP work group members. Other highlights from my week included: Met Richard Corley, artistic director, and Elizabeth Fadell, managing director, of the Madison Repertory Theatre
Attended College Council meeting
Held a graduation follow-up meeting
Was present for the district board appointments, which were made Tuesday evening
Met with part-time union members John Hueschen, Nancy McMahon and Sandra Docter
Attended board orientation for Vera Riley and Bob Elkins with John Ashley, Gerald McGowan, Judy Ecker and Ellen Hustad
Met with the Gainesville Florida Chamber of Commerce members
Taped intervew for the show, "For The Record" (did you watch the program on WISC-TV Channel 3 yesterday?)
Welcomed the Latino community to the Educational Opportunities Workshop Summer 2005 Series at DTEC Saturday morning
Remember this is the first official week of the summer flex schedule. The most important issue is serving our students and, at the same time, allowing for flexibility in scheduling and a little bit of R&R.
Happy trails to all until we "surge" again!
-- Bettsey
Bettsey L. Barhorst, President

GET INVOLVED!
The Combined Charitable Campaign is in search of its next leader and committee members. In a leader, the Combined Charitable Campaign seeks someone who will coordinate an excellent and hard-working committee to raise funds from MATC faculty and staff for local organizations that make a difference in our community. In committee members, the Combined Charitable Campaign seeks staff/faculty members who are passionate about the social service, environmental, and health organizations in our community, and who are willing to follow through with one or two tasks related to the campaign. Some refer to this campaign as the "United Way" campaign, and it is different from the MATC Foundation's Faculty/Staff Campaign, which raises funds for scholarships and programs here at MATC.The Combined Charitable Campaign Committee is a college work team.
Interested? Come to our next organizational meeting on Thursday, June 16, at noon. The room number will be sent in next week's staff bulletin. Email sfowles@matcmadison.edu with questions. If you can't make the meeting, but want to participate, email sfowles@matcmadison.edu.
