WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I want to remind you again to exercise your right to vote tomorrow when the Madison school referendum will be on the ballot.

I would like to thank those of you who have already attended a conversation session these past two weeks. I've been holding these sessions to get your input on college processes as I consider a reorganization that I discussed in an earlier message (you can read it at http://matcmadison.edu/ia/impr/staffbulletin/20050509.html).

If you did not get the opportunity to voice your opinion at one of these sessions, please contact me at 246-6676, bbarhorst@matcmadison.edu, or contact Becky Baumbach at 246-6081, rbaumbach@matcmadison.edu.

We also plan to hold some smaller focused sessions over the next month so let us know if you would like to participate in one of these. Please contact Becky Baumbach to express your interest. I look forward to seeing more of you at the remaining sessions scheduled this week:

MATC Marvels
Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college. Here are this week's "favorite teachers" as mentioned to me by the few students I could find on campus: Mike Bertrand and Jeff Havens, math instructors.

Other MATC Marvels

Geoff Bradshaw, student activities specialist, was elected Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflicts Studies

Barbara Anderegg, machine tool instructor, served on a review panel of the National Science Foundation to review proposals submitted to the Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program.

Janet Granberg, DoETS project leader, and many other DoETS staff deserve thanks for supporting the streamlining of the admissions process for student development and success.

Kudos goes to Terry Christensen and gang, instruction media staff, for being so helpful, dependable, pleasant and supportive with student final projects.

Mike Winckler, senior network specialist, has completed the CIS Advanced Technical Certificate in Web Programming.

While out visiting regional campuses, several people commented that they wanted Tom Fleming, senior network specialist, to just "live" there &endash; his skills (and good humor) are very much appreciated! Tom, how's that cloning project coming along?

33 of our graduates took the Dental Hygiene National Board and the Central Regional Testing Service Exams. 97% passed. This is a great success for MATC. Kudos to our dental hygiene faculty and staff.

And finally, streaming video of our commencement ceremonies was a great success-- congratulations to all the DoETS staff who made it happen: Terry Reed, Tom Fleming, Jim Russell, Terrie Thorstad and Paul Meske. It was a first for the college and it went well, exceeding expectations. Great job!

Highlights from my week
Monday's Redsten Golf Outing was a huge success! We sold a record number of raffle tickets and had a record number of golfers including staff, community members and donors. Proceeds go to the MATC Foundation for dissemination to the college's athletics department and students in the hospitality/management and recreation management programs. I was positioned at the 8th hole where I got to greet each golf team. Every golfer had a chance to win a Buick donated by Zimbrick Motors if they got a hole in one at the 8th hole. Unfortunately, there were no winners! It was a truly enjoyable day and a great opportunity for me to meet and talk with college staff and key stakeholders.

Last week was MATC's Tech Academy, and I was on hand on Tuesday morning when staff stopped in to pick up their registration packets.

Friday evening I attended the Latino Chamber of Commerce's Business Connection event where MATC was presented with the chamber's "Outstanding Support" award.

Sunday afternoon was filled with chills and thrills watching our WolfPack baseball team beat Iowa Central 9-5 to claim the district title and advance to the 2005 NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, TN. I am so proud of the team and the staff who support them. On to Tennessee! For more information on the series, visit the MATC Athletics Website at http://matcmadison.edu/athletics/.

As you are probably aware, we will be piloting a flex schedule for the summer. If you have questions about the flex scheduling, you can contact Will Strycker at 246-6901 or wstrycker@matcmadison.edu.

Until the Fall semester begins, I will post messages on alternating weeks. I hope you are getting a bit of time to enjoy spring, which has finally sprung!

-- Bettsey

More Tabbed MATC Catalogs Available
Still need a tabbed catalog? The tabbed "staff" catalogs have been distributed by Enrollment according to a list compiled last year and updated this year. We were conservative in compiling this list because we had limited supply BUT the good news is there are some left. If you would like a catalog with section tabs, please stop by Enrollment and pick one up&emdash;first come, first served. - Robin Gee
