WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Well, we made it! This was a successful year with over 3,400 graduates. This year's graduation was the first ever to feature live video feed and large screen projection of the ceremony, along with broadcast captioning. You can view the ceremony for the next 30 days online at: http://matcmadison.edu/matc/Commencement2005/default.shtm. Jessica Doyle was our guest keynote speaker, and it was a wonderful celebration of our students' success! Thanks to Keith Cornille and all the people involved in making the ceremony so successful.

On another note, knowing you are all keenly interested in education, I wanted to remind you of the May 24 election that will determine the Madison school referendum. Please remember to exercise your right to vote.

I would like to thank those of you who have already attended a conversation session this past week. I've been holding these sessions to get your input on college processes as I consider a reorganization that I discussed in last week's message (you can read it at http://matcmadison.edu/ia/impr/staffbulletin/20050509.html). If you did not get the opportunity to voice your opinion at one of these sessions, please contact me at 246-6676, bbarhorst@matcmadison.edu, or contact Becky Baumbach at 246-6081, rbaumbach@matcmadison.edu. MATC Marvels
Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college.

Here are this week's "favorite teachers" mentioned to me by students: Thomas Pomykalski, math instructor; Bill Colby (again!), history; Martine Delannay, sociology; and Brian Goodman, astronomy.

Other MATC Marvels
Scott Ritter
, of Education and Career Planning Counseling Services, was seen exercising at the Truax Fitness Center last Saturday when he noticed a student at a computer having difficulty finding registration information online. Not only did Scott stop his exercising and explain to the student the steps to register, he also sat down at the computer and helped the student navigate the MATC website.

The Business Professionals of America (BPA) club honored accounting instructor, Peg Boerman, for Outstanding Contributions to BPA. Over the years, Peg has raised hundreds of dollars for the club through her sale of Valentine's Day and Christmas Cookies. She is a strong supporter of the club's activities and is always interested in helping ensure that students have the opportunity to travel and participate in state and national leadership conferences.

Mae Laatsch, marketing instructor, was honored at the 2005 International Delta Epsilon Chi Conference for her 40 years as a marketing club advisor.

Highlights from my week
Of course the biggest highlights of the past week were graduation and the nurse pinning ceremonies. Here's a list of other things I did last week:

• honored our retirees with a college-wide celebration on Monday at Truax and attended the annual retiree potluck held by AAT&I

• met with our PSRP Union President Annie Neuberger

• talked with our faculty technology caucus

• attended my first Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI) and Madison Symphony Orchestra board meetings

• went to a TEMPO meeting (an organization encouraging the advancement of women to executive positions in business, public service, academia, and the arts)

• interviewed by Karen Rivedal, Wisconsin State Journal higher education reporter, for her MATC graduation story

• filmed a video welcome message to be viewed by students at the upcoming new student orientation. Janice Mettauer, English instructor, and Delisa Scott, counselor, are helping organize the student orientation, and they prepped me for my videotaping, which only required two takes! (Nena Saucerman, instructional media assistant, did a great job with the videotaping!)

• met with the Learning Symposium on Wednesday

• attended the MATC District Board meeting at our Fort Atkinson campus

• attended the MATC Foundation's "visioning" conversation

• enjoyed the Arts & Sciences Open House

• met with Art Rainwater, Madison Metropolitan School District superintendent

• attended the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee meeting Friday morning

• stopped by Commercial Avenue to observe a motorcycle safety class, followed by the Faculty Mentoring Program breakfast

• met with Ed Clarke and Noel Radomski and Bob Brennan of the UW-Madison Office of Corporate Relations

• rehearsed for our commencement ceremony

• met with our outgoing board member, Rose Williams

WHEW, what a week!

Hope to see all of you at Tech Academy this week,

-- Bettsey

Announcements

Summer School 2005 Marketing Campaign Launches
Our marketing campaign for summer school 2005 launches in mass media this week. A memo, media schedule and sample ads have been sent to managers via their mailboxes to share with front-line staff who may receive inquiries prompted by our marketing activities. The media schedule and samples also are available at: http://matcmadison.edu/matc/employee/strategiceffectiveness/impr/Summer2005.shtm.

You may want to check out the prominent billboard promoting our summer college transfer classes in the heart of the UW at University Ave and Randall St. atop Luthers Blues. In addition, we are promoting summer school on the MATC homepage, where web visitors now can view our web schedule of classes for interim or summer classes or download a PDF of our Summer & Interim Class Schedule.

Our ads feature the theme "Get Ahead at MATC Summer School" and, as always, show real MATC students and grads. If you have any questions, please contact jkelly@matcmadison.edu or ext. 6127.

The New Catalogs Have Arrived
The new 2005-2006 catalogs are in. The tabbed "staff" catalogs just arrived and Enrollment is preparing them for distribution. They expect to begin distribution this week. Again, there is a limited supply. If you need catalogs for students delivered to your area, please contact Dennis Michaelis in Shipping. He has been busy sending out catalogs to the regional campuses and to Downtown (so if you are Downtown or at a regional campus, there should be some in your shipping area already). I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for all their help this year! - Robin Gee
