WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,As I have experienced MATC for the past four months through conversations with students, visits to campuses, meetings with faculty, staff, and administrators, and many connections with our partners and legislators in the community, I have realized that the overall goals of student success and the Learning College Principles provide the right focus for MATC. The Learning College Principles can be read on the MATC Website at http://matcmadison.edu/matc/about/vanguard2.shtm. Our district board and college officially embraced these principles in 2000. I encourage you to reread the Principles, as they are a powerful reminder of where we are headed.
In reviewing the Principles myself, I realize that we have much work to do if we want to create the results for learners that the Principles outline, and we have much work to do to grow the college in a tightening financial environment. Today's challenges require new results for our learners and for the community. We can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results. Therefore, to help prepare for the exciting future before us, I will be working on a reorganization plan over the upcoming months that will look at MATC through the lens of the results we want for our students and community and the processes we will need to achieve those results. We then will look at the relationships among our key processes and will create an organizational structure that leads and serves those key processes.
Like the Learning College Principles, the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) is another point of guidance. The AQIP accreditation process helps us maintain the highest quality college. We have been using AQIP for more than two years now to challenge ourselves to do our best. To learn more about AQIP, see http://matcmadison.edu/matc/employee/strategiceffectiveness/aqip/completedactions/about.shtm. Through our participation in AQIP, we are already committed to a philosophy of becoming a process-focused organization through a systems thinking approach. I want to build on that model as I look at reorganizing our college.
Over the next few weeks, I am inviting all employees of the college to attend conversation sessions similar to the sessions we hold during the AQIP process. In these upcoming sessions I've planned, we will discuss the key processes of the college and how they relate to each other. Please come to these sessions ready to share your knowledge of processes at the college. I want to know which processes work, which don't work, and which need to be clarified. At the sessions, I will share an illustration that provides a conceptual view of the organization and forms the basis for change. The illustration is made up of a series of concentric circles with the students and community stakeholders at the center, since the students and community are at the center of all that we do.
Following the conversation sessions, with help from others and the input from staff, I will group the processes using the nine AQIP categories, and from these groupings, we will create a new structure for the college that will be designed to: 1) remove barriers to our full implementation of the Learning College Principles; and 2) facilitate decision making focused on student needs.
A new seventh Learning College Principle has just been adopted: "Create and nurture an organizational culture that is both open and responsive to change and learning." If we want to fully implement the first six principles, this seventh principle is vital. It is my goal to create a more agile organization poised to be more responsive to our students and stakeholders. The changes to come will be transformational, and they likely will produce some short-term chaos. We may make some mistakes, but I assure you that all the changes will be for the greater good - for improved services and options for our students.
While the timing is not ideal now at the end of the academic year, I've been on board four months and need to start moving forward with these changes. I will continue to communicate with all of you over the summer via the Staff Bulletin and, soon, the new online employee newsletter, MATC Matters, which we will be piloting this summer. I will update you along the way on the process and developments of the reorganization. While many of you will not be on campus during the summer, we will continue to move forward, so I invite you to stop in for one of our upcoming conversation sessions and participate in the process. And, as always, stay tuned to your college email.
I hope to see you at one of these conversation sessions:

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college. Here are this week's "favorite teachers" mentioned to me by students: Maryann Bodien, instructional support Portage; Bernie Hoes, English; Dan Hein, small engine; Eric Nesheim, commercial art; Thomas Curtis, English; Jeganathan "Sri" Sriskandarajah, math; and Spencer Walts, art.
Other MATC Marvels
Congratulations to Wendy Arena, adult basic ed instructor, for her presentation, "Helping Students Become More Accountable for Their Learning," at the annual Adult Basic Education Curriculum Conference in Green Lake; Greg Klinkner, building and grounds Portage, for the wonderful job he does keeping everything in tip-top shape; and Nancy Schley, for keynoting a computing lecture, "The Systematic Design of Learning," in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. All the folks who organized and volunteered at the DTEC and Truax cookouts last week did a wonderful job! Thanks for providing our students, faculty, and staff with a great community event.Highlights from my week
Things are still hopping at MATC! What another busy week! I'll do my best to keep this list short. I started my week on Monday and Tuesday with a broadcast captioning demonstration and attended meetings with our union presidents Joe Lowndes (full-time faculty), Annie Neuberger (PSRP), and John Hueschen (part-time faculty), and the WISC-TV Channel 3 editorial board. I attended the memorial service and lunch for Luvern Mitby, where I was fortunate to meet several MATC retirees. I also attended a College Council meeting and recognized our award-winning CIS students at a reception in the McAllen building.I made a presentation to the Lodi Optimist Club on Wednesday and stopped at the Portage Campus to visit with students; attended the Faculty/Staff Annual Campaign Recognition Reception at Jill Mason's beautiful downtown condo; and got a chance to meet some students during my brief time at the annual Truax Campus Cookout hosted by Student Life. Unfortunately, I was in a big rush to get on the road to attend a meeting in Appleton for the WTCS Presidents Meeting on Thursday and Friday, so I had to literally grab my lunch and go. I appreciate the folks who let me jump ahead of them in the line for the burgers! Last, but certainly not least, I attended the MATC Show Choir performance on Friday evening in Mitby Theater that was emceed by Patrick Barlow, our staff development coordinator.
One more week! We're almost there!

MATC Foundation Faculty/Staff Campaign a Smashing Success!
On Wednesday, May 4, faculty and staff contributors to the MATC Foundation came together to celebrate in style in downtown Madison. We had much to celebrate: this year, 37% of full-time faculty and staff made a contribution to scholarship and program funds at the MATC Foundation. Faculty and staff are on track to raise $60,000 for scholarships and programs by June 30, 2005!The Campaign reception featured the You Go Girl / Way To Go Guy Scholarship Fund for single parents - a fund that has captured the attention and imagination of many faculty and staff. The Foundation received 66 scholarship applications from single parents, and we'd like to try and support each one of them. If you'd like to learn more about making a contribution to a scholarship fund or program fund, please contact Sarah Fowles at (608) 243-4334 or sfowles@matcmadison.edu.
