WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

WOW, things are really hopping at MATC! What a busy week it has been! I'll do my best to keep this list short! I had a lot of contact with the UW this week. I met UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, Provost Peter Spear, and Allen Phelps, program director of UW-Madison Center on Education and Work, and I was interviewed by a UW-Madison doctoral candidate. I also met Dr. Frank Byrne, president of St. Mary's Hospital, and Terry Kelly, founder and owner of Weather Central and the founder and prime mover behind Rhythm and Booms, Madison's Independence Day Celebration and fireworks display.

I attended MANY special events last week including: the Prospective Student Relations appreciation event at the MATC baseball game (our WolfPack won both games against Triton College last week); Women in Information Technology Expo; Student Success Celebration; Council of Friends donor reception; "Unforgettable Favorites," the MATC Art and Design Student Portfolio Show; MATC Foundation Awards Breakfast; SkillsUSA and the Athletic Banquet.

In addition, I attended: Edgewood College's presidential inauguration for Dan Carey; Student Senate's year-end recognition; Wisconsin Women in Government with keynote speaker U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton - and I had the opportunity to meet with her on Saturday; Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast; MATC Global Horizon's Community Cultural Festival, and the Wisconsin Organization for Asian Americans Spring Unity Potluck.

I had a chance to attend the Yahara Journal book release celebration on Friday and would like to recognize our student writers and artists and the MATC Foundation Board, as their generosity supports learning such as this project. Thank you, board members.

WHEW - what a week! All of the people responsible for coordinating these end-of-the-year celebrations are MATC Marvels. Thank you, everyone, for working so hard to honor our students and their learning achievements.

MATC Marvels

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college.

Here are this week's "favorite teachers" mentioned to me by students: Barb Hundt, psychology; Betty Hurd, fashion marketing; Turina Bakken, marketing; Carol Moretti, graphic design; Mark Finger, accounting; Don Williamson Jr., algebra; Bill Huntsman, chemistry; Jack Pace and Martin Redmann, police science. Barber/Cosmetology students at the Student Success Celebration said they still miss John Fahey, but Melissa Brainerd, cosmetology, is awesome.

Other MATC Marvels

Kent Kobke, Watertown career and academic advisor, conducted some rapid response workshops on Thursday in response to the news that Johnson Controls will be shutting down production in Watertown and moving to Mexico by the end of the year. Kent met with the 57 workers who will lose their jobs to let them know their options for retraining at MATC. Kent really went the extra mile, offering three sessions for workers to attend, including one from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. for shift workers and night owls.

Once again, the folks in AAT&I did a great job coordinating student participation in the Skills USA competitions. The event even made the Wisconsin State Journal!

At the Athletics Banquet, a special award was given to Gary "Big Dog" Breneman. Gary is a food service worker here at MATC and has been the team manager for the MATC Baseball and Basketball teams for the past 30 years. If you've been to any baseball games, you have probably seen Gary in the dugout. Gary is a longtime fan of the television show, The Price is Right. He even tapes the show every day! So to give Gary a special reward, alumni, friends and coaches pitched in to send Gary on an all-expenses paid trip to California to be on The Price is Right!

Don't let these last bursts of snow slow our springtime momentum!

Announcements

Generation Mix National Awareness Tour at DTEC
The MATC Social Change Collective is hosting an exciting event this week when the Generation Mix National Awareness Tour will make its only Wisconsin stop at the Downtown Education Center, Wednesday, May 4, from 3-7 p.m. The National Awareness Tour is the journey of five multiracial young adults to raise awareness of America's mixed race baby boom. The five young adults are traveling the United States in a 26-foot RV, stopping in 16 cities to promote a national dialogue about the multiracial experience.

At each stop, local communities learn about the multiracial experience through family friendly activities, interactive games, reading materials, comprehensive resource lists and facilitated dialogues. In addition to the activity fairs, audiences will enjoy a keynote stage presentation by the five tour crew members who will combine personal anecdotes with compelling information about the mixed race experience.

Questions can be directed to Harold Gates at hgates@matcmadison.edu. Come celebrate the diversity of Madison on Wednesday!
