WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Last week, MATC lost a friend and colleague, Carl Brice. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Carl's family has expressed that memorial gifts in his name go to the MATC Foundation's Carl Brice Endowment Fund, the Madison Elk Charities or Hospice Care.

MATC Marvels

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college. Here are this week's "favorite teachers" mentioned to me by students: Bradley McDowell, psychology; Mary Kraus, genetics; Elizabeth "Elyse" Van Ginkel, chemistry.

Here is a wonderful quote from a dental hygiene program graduate: "The doctor told me that my skills are very good for only being out of school under a year. The term he used for me was a hygienist and a half…" Congratulations to our Dental Hygiene Program instructors.

Other MATC Marvels

Jeganathan Sriskandarajah "Sri" has been elected Chair of the Wisconsin Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Thank you Dennis Reible, one of our groundskeepers, for the wonderful job you do keeping our grounds in tip-top shape. (The tulips are still beautiful!)

The students of Carol Moretti, graphic arts instructor, and Janet Sperstad, meeting and event management instructor, did a great job coordinating the annual Earth Day celebration for Habitat for Humanity's ReStore.

Thanks to all programs and instructors who have completed Course Analysis Forms, Program Outcomes and Learning Outcomes Matrices. These assessment efforts have created an opportunity for communication among faculty and advisory committees, renewing focus and enriching the curriculum to benefit student learning. Our Assessment and Evaluation Department looks forward to working with those programs and instructors who have not yet had the opportunity to complete this important project.

Highlights from my week:

On Monday, I joined a group of student leaders and members from the campus community to participate in the Student Center Concept Visioning Day. The goal of this event, organized by Student Life, was to bring the college face-to-face with a group of architects in order to develop a more concrete project vision for improving student space at the college. As a group, we had a day of very productive brainstorming sessions. I was so impressed with the creativity, cooperation and problem-solving skills of the participants. Thanks to Keith Cornille, our Student Life Administrator, who oversaw the organization of the event.

On Tuesday morning, I gave a presentation to Downtown Madison Inc. about MATC's impact within the community. Topics covered included trends, job training, workforce development and our contribution to the state economy.

I attended the Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI) Bio-Ethics Forum on Thursday morning at Promega. It was great to see so many faculty, staff and students representing MATC at the forum.

The Hawkeye Community College Foundation honored me with the prestigious "Inspiration Award" at their annual Appreciation Dinner on Thursday evening. The Inspiration Award is given annually to recognize donors who have demonstrated commitments of time, talent and resources for the betterment of the college.

Friday evening I attended the Culinary Arts Program's "Evening of Good Taste" at the Lussier Family Heritage Center and sampled many delicacies prepared by our Culinary Arts Program instructors and students. Everything was simply delicious! Proceeds from this event will benefit MATC's Culinary Arts Department.

So, that's it from the President's Office! Hang in there during these last few weeks. I look forward to seeing many of you at the end-of-the-year events taking place in the next couple weeks.

Best Wishes!

-- Bettsey
