WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

It's been a spring week at MATC. The students seem to be in good moods, but we know they may feel stressed within the next few weeks. As I look out my window, I can see tulips in the parking lot flowerbed and, like all of you, I am experiencing the flurry of activities that come our way at the end of the school year. I am aware of just how many great student-related events and activities take place in the next few weeks and I'd like to attend as many as possible. Please be sure to let me know about upcoming events you think I should attend.

MATC Marvels

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter or learn about here at the college. Here are this week's "favorite teachers" mentioned to me by students: Gaila Olsen, math instructor; Michael Kostrna and Bill Carmichael, electron microscopy instructors; Janet Romich, biology instructor; Karen Redfield, English instructor; Theresa Martell, piano instructor.

One of our graduates in the medical assistant program would like to thank her instructors Kathy Sellnow, Sue Buboltz and Mary Ellen Duffy.

Other MATC Marvels:

I'd like to recognize Juanita Comeau, Sandra Blumer and Sean Saiz, as well as NASA (Native American Student Association) and many others on our staff and faculty for coordinating our 14th annual Pow Wow on Saturday. It was an amazing and impressive celebration that fostered community, learning and fun. Thank you for your hard work!

Special thanks to Margi Foley-administrative clerk in Facilities, Denise Stenklyft-fitness center assistant, and custodial staff Bob Fumuso, Don Gammon, Linda Koroch, Jim LaCour, Maria Lim, Rhoda McKinney, Charlie Rakow, Rhiny Seeman and Travis Weirsma for their hard work with the April 9 Odyssey of the Mind event, detailed at http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/whatis.php.

Mae Laatsch has been appointed to the Small Business Development Committee at the national level for the Business and Professional Women &endash; BPW/USA.

Timothy Jacobson, financial aid administrator, and Gwen Torkelson, assessment manager, will participate in the Wisconsin Leadership Development Institute (WLDI), which prepares future leaders for the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Highlights from my week:

This week, I was particularly impressed with the student art show, the attendance at the Molloy lectures, the fabulous meal provided by our Culinary Art Program students for Madison Kipp's Milt McPike Achievement Awards banquet, and with the students who presented at the board meeting on Wednesday night, Jaimi Kolehouse, Student Senate president, and Billy Anderson, Student Senate parliamentarian. Shaylea Stensven, our student ambassador, was recognized at the WTCS State Ambassador Banquet, which I attended after the board meeting. I also enjoyed the Pow Wow on Saturday, although I was only able to attend for a brief time.

As we wind down the school year, I wish you all the best. When I left the classroom to transition from instructor to administrator, what I missed most, besides the students, was the feeling of closure at the end of each semester. For those of you who are not instructors and don't get to experience this closure a few times each year, I want you to know that your continuous work throughout the year is greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

-- Bettsey

Announcements

Nominations Sought for Outstanding Employee or Team Award
In recognition of MATC's inspiring and resourceful faculty and staff, the Recognition and Awards Committee will begin presenting Outstanding Employee or Team Award more than once a year. Since the award is nomination-based, the committee needs your input! Nominate a team or employee who upholds the college values of excellence, respect, and integrity. Consider coworkers or teams who inspire with their enthusiasm and ability to accomplish astonishing things, solve problems, make a richer experience for students, or simply make your daily job better.

You will receive a letter this week in your mailbox. You can learn more and obtain nomination forms at http://matcmadison.edu/recognition or request an electronic or hard copy by emailing vweihman@matcmadison.edu. Nominations are due by May 12.

Association of Information Technology Professionals Student Awards
Members of our student Information Technology group, the Madison Info Tech Association, competed at the national AITP (Assoc. of Information Technology Professionals) conference in Atlanta, GA last weekend.

Three of our four teams earned awards: Aaron Parker and Chris Hartwig won third place in the Java competition (of 29 teams); Matt Stemrich and Nate Sutton won honorable mention in Network Design (of 62 teams); Andy Osborn and Jeremy Schraeder won honorable mention (fifth place) in PC-Troubleshooting (of 86 teams). The faculty advisor for the group is Mac Robertson; we appreciate his commitment to our students.

792 students from over 90 schools (including four-year colleges such as Purdue) participated in the events. The success of our MATC teams reflects well upon our college, students, programs, and faculty. As Mac pointed out, "it indicates that we are providing training at a level that meets national competitive standards." - Judy Olson Sutton, Associate Dean, Business

Road Construction on East Washington Avenue UPDATE
Along with the continuing construction on a section of East Washington that runs near the Truax campus, the pedestrian tunnel at Wright Street and Fair Oaks will be closed until September 1, 2005. During the closure, a pedestrian crosswalk has been drawn at the street level.

Although all intersections and at least two lanes in each direction will remain open, motorists should be aware that traffic along East Washington may slow, especially at the intersection of Hwy 51/Stoughton. Motorists should also be aware of changes to pedestrian crossings, temporary signals, lane crossovers and gravel surfaces. Some Metro bus stops along East Washington will be affected. For more information on bus stop closures see http://www.mymetrobus.com/.

The MATC Department of Facilities Management will keep the campus updated on any changes. For more details about the East Washington construction, visit the website posted by the city of Madison at http://www.eastwashingtonavenue.com.
