WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,Tomorrow, Tuesday April 12, MATC is hosting an amazing speaker who has been personally involved in facilitating peace negotiations in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I have known Ambassador Michael James Molloy since we both lived in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was a commissioner at UNHCR (United Nations High Commission on Refugees). He served as Canada's Ambassador to Jordan from 1996-2000 and as the Special Coordinator of the Middle East Peace Process for the Canadian Foreign Service from 2000-2003.
Ambassador Molloy is an individual with a wealth of information to share on the future of the Middle East and understandings of political relations in the region. I encourage you to attend his public lecture at 7:00 p.m. in the Wisconsin Ballroom at the Concourse Hotel on Tuesday, April 12. This event is free and open to the public.
Ambassador Molloy also is available to talk to students at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 in the Student Lounge at Truax. Please contact Geoff Bradshaw (246-6165 or email at gbradshaw@matcmadison.edu) to make arrangements for this truly exceptional program opportunity. I would really appreciate a large audience and I can guarantee this is a program well worth your time. For more information on this event, visit http://matcmadison.edu/matc/news/2005/04_april/GHLectures.shtm.
There is talk about a reengineering plan being explored by the Learning Symposium (Learning Programs, Outreach Learning and Student Development & Success). I want you to know that this is still in the exploratory stages and no decisions have been made. I'm looking at the overall organization of the college, studying the history of our organizational plans, and seeking input. As I promised when I came on board, I will be creating a President's Advisory Team (PAT) to help with this and other issues. The PAT will include representatives from all employment groups of the college, the regional campuses, as well as a representative from the student body. The reengineering plan is an example of the kind of issue I will bring before the PAT.
MATC Marvels
Here are this week's "favorite teachers" as mentioned by students with whom I spoke:
Marla Brenner and Tom Barry, graphic design instructors; Bill Colby, history instructor; Susan Jacobs, psychology instructor; Holly Kerby, science instructor; Luke Matthews, anthropology instructor (this is the second time a student has mentioned him); Greg Schulte, art instructor; James Wilson, Spanish instructor.
Other MATC Marvels include:
Turina Bakken, marketing instructor, and Jack Hart, hospitality and tourism instructor, organized a student trip to Ireland as a part of a cultural and educational exchange program with MATC's sister college, Fermanagh College in Northern Ireland. Upon returning from their trip, they shared their photo essays, their enthusiasm, enjoyment, and certainly the learning that took place on their trip. They were fortunate enough to spend St. Patrick's Day in Ireland and returned with some interesting stories to share.
MATC has been awarded $15,000 by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce for operations of the T.E.C. Center Incubator. These funds will be used to offset operational costs of the incubator to keep costs low for the tenants. The award is a result of a grant application submitted by the T.E.C. Board, on which Ed Clarke, Kevin Myren and John Lalor serve.
Greg Ferguson, criminal justice instructor, received a community service award from The Exchange Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, for his work in preparing criminal justice students for work with youth.
I received an email tribute to Scott Beard, Portage campus administrator. The email explained, "this gentleman serves on 12 different boards, and is a creative, thoughtful, intelligent, energetic administrator."
John Stransky, associate dean of Protective Services, and Prospective Student Relations coordinated a very successful and interactive Career Snapshot on March 29 featuring careers in criminal justice, fire service, and EMT.
I received a letter complimenting French instructor Mary Haight and recent retiree Sandra Loman for providing an outstanding educational experience for participants of the French Odyssey 2005, an educational trip to Paris and Provence.
DoETS staff helped our consortium partner Western Wisconsin Technical College (WWTC-LaCrosse) successfully convert to the Student Administration System. After approximately 60 hours of around-the-clock work, the WWTC conversions were completed. Special thanks to Peri Mills, Kathy Allen, Ken LeClair, and Frank Ianne of DoETS who worked straight through that weekend.
Congratulations to Debbie Derr, executive dean of Student Development and Success, who was elected as the president-elect for the National Council on Student Development (an affiliate council of AACC).
Thanks to Susan Agee, lab technician for Arts and Sciences and 1st vice president of the PSRP Union, for attending the area union activists meeting and introducing me to the members.
I want to recognize JR Colvin, machine tool instructor, whom I met during my tour of AAT&I last month.
After outperforming itself all year, the MATC Women's Basketball Team won its final game of the season to claim fourth place at the 2005 NJCAA Women's Tournament. The team sent a letter of appreciation to tournament host, Corning Community College and received this response from Corning's Pat and Mary Keeler:
". . . your team represented your school in the highest tradition of sportsmanship. It is especially noteworthy given the incidences of poor sportsmanship exhibited by some of the other teams. Your team certainly had reason to complain but they did not. It certainly is a reflection of your's and Coach Steve Bentin's leadership that the integrity of the game is more important than the individual."By the way, ours was the first thank you letter Corning had ever received in all its years hosting the NJCAA women's basketball tournament. When you see Coach Bentin be sure to congratulate him.
Highlights from my week:
I was very fortunate (and lucky!) to win the 2nd place prize in the Pow Wow raffle drawing of a men's Schwinn Sidewinder bicycle! I have donated the bicycle to the Culinary Arts Department for the silent auction to be held at "An Evening of Good Taste," on Friday April 22, 7-10:00 p.m., at the Lussier Family Heritage Center. To learn more about this delicious and entertaining event, check out: http://matcmadison.edu/culinaryevents/. This should be a great event and now you have a chance to win a bicycle!
InBusiness Magazine interviewed me for a feature article to appear in the May.
During the annual WTCS District Boards Association legislative seminar, I met with Senators Miller and Risser, and Representatives Black, Hines, Parisi, Pocan and Ward.
An exhibit of paintings by MATC students opened last Thursday at Michelangelo's Coffeehouse (114 State Street). The exhibition will be on display throughout the month of April. Congratulations to Greg Schulte, art instructor, for the wonderful opening.
Have a great week!
