WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,Tomorrow (Tuesday, April 5) you have an opportunity to vote for local leaders who we all hope will work as hard as you do. From local school board races to municipal leadership seats, the people you choose will be responsible for running the schools, providing police and fire protection, and making sure your tax dollars are spent wisely to strengthen this community and maintain the high quality of life that you enjoy.
Unfortunately, in recent years, voter turnout in the spring elections has been much lower than in fall elections. In spring 2003, for example, less than 30 percent of the voters in Dane County turned out, compared with 80 percent for the fall 2004 elections.
The simple fact of the matter is that if you don't vote, your views won't be heard and your family's needs won't be considered.
Whatever your top issues, your party affiliation or philosophical position, I urge you to help select the men and women who will decide what sort of community we will enjoy in the years to come by voting on April 5 for the candidates of your choice.
I hope you can take the time to make your vote count!
Happy Spring! I think it's finally here!
And, thanks for all of your cooperation for student safety during last week's tornado warning.
-- Bettsey
Bettsey L. Barhorst, President

"Other Funding"
Calling all faculty and staff! Are you finding yourself wishing for more dollars for learning projects in your department? Do you feel that you have some projects that are worthy of financial support from private foundations? For those of you who haven't done any fundraising and aren't clear about what makes private foundations different from other types of funding entities, here's a definition: A private foundation is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization with funds (usually from a single source, such as an individual, family, or corporation) and programs managed by its own trustees or directors. The funds are program are established to maintain or aid social educational, religious, or other charitable activities serving the common welfare, primarily through the making of grants.
The MATC Foundation is compiling a resource guide that can help you. We have perused the directory of Foundations in Wisconsin and printed profiles of those foundations that have indicated an interest in at least one of the two things MATC is all about: Access to learning and economic development.
We will make this resource guide available to any interested faculty or staff member provided that you help coordinate our efforts by agreeing to do the following.
1. Contact the MATC Foundation Office for information about a foundation prospect. Together we'll determine the feasibility of cultivating the foundation in question for a specific project. The two primary factors affecting feasibility are MATC's current relationship (if any) with the foundation and whether or not another faculty or staff member is already working with the foundation on a request.
2. When we agree that you will approach a specific foundation, you will submit a grant proposal or application to the foundation by the foundation's next deadline. If you do not solicit the foundation by the next deadline, the MATC Foundation will work with the faculty or staff member who is "next in line" to approach the foundation.
3. You'll provide a copy of the grant proposal or application materials to the MATC Foundation.
4. As you work on the grant proposal or application, you'll contact the MATC Foundation for any resources or assistance you may need.
To sign up to receive an external foundation resource guide, email sfowles@matcmadison.edu.
