WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,Welcome back, faculty! Things were quiet around here last week but, amazingly, I did find students in the library and even some in the halls.
MATC Marvels
Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter here at the college. As last week was spring break, I only heard about a few "MATC Marvels" from students. But here are a few quotes from students telling me about their marvelous instructors:
Larry Hansen, English instructor: "He believed in me so much."
Michael Johnson, finance/accounting instructor: "He inspired me."
I even met a prospective student who wants to return to school to upgrade computer skills and was very pleased with the Portage Campus Academic Advisor, John Kinsler, and wanted to say thank you.
Other "MATC Marvels" include:
Art Department students had a great showing, winning many awards for their ADDY entries at the 2005 Madison Advertising Federation annual show. Do we have great, talented students or what?! The following students won awards: Gregory Pleshar, Chris Hoffman, Lindsey Skinner, Marni Peterson, Cathy Sheets, Curtis Whaley, Kevin Christensen, Colleen Sheilds, Kelly Shaw, Joanna Schwabach, Christine Rolli, Christine Rousch and Michael A. Moore.
Now, we wouldn't have great art students, as mentioned above, if we didn't have super instructors. I would like to recognize our Art Department faculty for their wonderful exhibits displaying their superb talents at the 4th Annual MATC Art Department Faculty Art Show: Penny Aguilera, John Andrews, Marla Brenner, Ed Binkley, Barbara Borders, Chris Gargan, Michael Martin, Carol Moretti, Herb Nelson, Mark Nelson, Eric Nesheim, Karen Okster, Mario Quintana, John Ribble, Greg Schulte, Katherine Streichen Rosing, R. David Shaul, Marcia Smith, Kevin Stohlmeyer, Ya-Ling Tsai, Andree Valley, Spencer Walts, Jim Wildeman. For me personally, the most interesting piece was "Bush Bible" by Michael Martin. A special thank you to Michael for pulling the show together. You can still catch the art show through this Thursday, March 31st, so head on over to the Truax library if you can!
Geoff Bradshaw, a student activities specialist for the Student Life and Development Center, has been selected to participate in the NAFSA: Association of International Educators mentoring program, which aims to cultivate and mentor a new generation of international education specialists who will further advance the agenda of international education for a global community. It is especially targeted at helping community colleges in the establishment, expansion, or strengthening of international education offices/departments on their campuses. Geoff is currently working to integrate his experiences from the Academy with the MATC Three-Year Plan for International Education.
Shawna Carter's application was selected for MATC to participate in the Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship Program (M3C Fellows Program) to focus on the retention and academic success of predominantly first generation college students. Shawna's successful proposal is posted on the Wisconsin Campus Compact site to serve as examples for other potential applicants. You can view it in PDF format by visiting http://www.uwp.edu/departments/community.partnerships/wicampuscompact/M3C/ and clicking on the link for Madison Area Technical College "Community Fellows Program."
Since I cannot get everywhere and talk with everyone (though I'm trying), I need your help. Let me know the "MATC Marvels" you encounter, and share your stories with me.
Highlights from my week:
I met two new employees on Monday during their orientation, Suzanne Zentner, Career Ladder Project coordinator, and Melissa Lapp, payroll administrative clerk. Welcome to MATC!
The TEMPO Leadership and Awards Celebration was held on Monday on UW's campus at the Pyle Center. Toni Sikes, CEO and President of Guild.com gave the keynote speech about leadership. The event wrapped up with a reception at the governor's residence where I met Governor and Mrs. Doyle and Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton. Mrs. Doyle commented to me how much she appreciated Kevin Kiehl, the governor's executive chef and our former student.
Monday evening, I met Madison area union activists during their monthly meeting at the South Central Federation of Labor. Our very own Joe Lowndes, Annie Neuberger and Robin Gee were there and introduced me to the group. I really appreciated Joe's introduction.
On Tuesday, I attended the Wisconsin Women Forward statewide convention at the Monona Terrace and Convention Center. Several of Janet Sperstad's Meeting and Event Management Program students assisted with the on-site registration: Michelle Armstrong, Liz Diggins, Diana Duplissis, Becky Koch, Jayme Paquette and Dawn Wiedenfeld. Alison Barta had been involved in the planning of the convention, as well as registration and on-site logistics. In addition, I had the opportunity to spend time over lunch with Lynn Perkins, our administrator in charge of student recruiting and Prospective Student Relations. To learn more about Wisconsin Women Forward, visit http://www.wisconsinwomenequalsprosperity.org/aboutwwp.html.
On Wednesday, Heidi Freymiller, writer and copy editor for The Clarion, interviewed me about my experiences at our barber/cosmetology lab. I told Heidi that during my second week here at MATC I got my hair styled and it was great!
Also on Wednesday, the MATC District Board met to learn more about a collaborative project with Dane County presented by Terry Webb, executive dean for Learning Programs, and Kathy Sellnow, Emergency Preparedness Education coordinator, about the Dane County Law Enforcement Training Center. The main topic of the board meeting, however, was a report from Chuck McIntyre with Computer-Aided Planning, on Market Research & Enrollment Management for MATC. He had collected very helpful data from focus groups conducted last fall and from our statistics. We will be publishing his report when it is finished in July - stay tuned.
Have a great week!

Student Space Work Team Conducting Online Survey
The Student Space Work Team is currently conducting an online survey regarding student space at all locations across the district. The group is interested in getting as much feedback as possible in order to begin a college-wide project to assess student space. The survey will take only about 5 minutes to complete and will be live between March 15 and April 1.Click on the survey now.
After the surveys have been collected, the architecture firm Kahler-Slater will help a group of 75 student leaders and members from the campus community develop a more concrete vision for improving student space. They will be looking into the feasibility of a student center at Truax and other long-term improvements to all our facilities that can make all campuses warm and welcoming for students.
As this initiative progresses, the work team will keep the college community informed of happenings.

Need Some News to Warm Your Heart in Chilly March?
How about this: The MATC Foundation's Faculty-Staff Campaign has seen a 5% increase in the total number of faculty and staff donors during the current fiscal year (and the current fiscal year isn't over until June 30!). Among our full-time staff, an incredible 35% are supporting the MATC Foundation Faculty-Staff Campaign. To date, as a staff, we have raised nearly $40,000 to support vital funds at the Foundation. Here is a note from a student scholarship recipient received in the Foundation Office:
Thank you very much for the opportunity to win a scholarship for Spring Semester 2005. This scholarship will help me achieve my career goals of being a computer engineer. Currently, I am a full-time student and also work full-time. I have a wife and a three-month-old daughter. This award will help relieve the financial burden we have while trying to raise a family and finish school. Again, I truly thank you for your generosity.
If you'd like to sign up to support the Faculty-Staff Campaign, complete this form. If you have any questions about the campaign, please call Sarah Fowles, the Faculty-Staff Campaign Coordinator, at 243-4334.

"Other Funding"
Calling all faculty and staff! Are you finding yourself wishing for more dollars for learning projects in your department? Do you feel that you have some projects that are worthy of financial support from private foundations? For those of you who haven't done any fundraising and aren't clear about what makes private foundations different from other types of funding entities, here's a definition: A private foundation is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization with funds (usually from a single source, such as an individual, family, or corporation) and programs managed by its own trustees or directors. The funds are program are established to maintain or aid social educational, religious, or other charitable activities serving the common welfare, primarily through the making of grants.
The MATC Foundation is compiling a resource guide that can help you. We have perused the directory of Foundations in Wisconsin and printed profiles of those foundations that have indicated an interest in at least one of the two things MATC is all about: Access to learning and economic development.
We will make this resource guide available to any interested faculty or staff member provided that you help coordinate our efforts by agreeing to do the following.
1. Contact the MATC Foundation Office for information about a foundation prospect. Together we'll determine the feasibility of cultivating the foundation in question for a specific project. The two primary factors affecting feasibility are MATC's current relationship (if any) with the foundation and whether or not another faculty or staff member is already working with the foundation on a request.
2. When we agree that you will approach a specific foundation, you will submit a grant proposal or application to the foundation by the foundation's next deadline. If you do not solicit the foundation by the next deadline, the MATC Foundation will work with the faculty or staff member who is "next in line" to approach the foundation.
3. You'll provide a copy of the grant proposal or application materials to the MATC Foundation.
4. As you work on the grant proposal or application, you'll contact the MATC Foundation for any resources or assistance you may need.
To sign up to receive an external foundation resource guide, email sfowles@matcmadison.edu.
