WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As I write to you on the Friday before Spring Break there is fresh snow on the ground! As much as we like to complain about it, imagine how much more annoying it is for Dave Hendrix, the Facilities groundskeeper who shoveled all that snow this morning! I wanted to say thanks to Dave and all the other groundskeepers at all of the MATC locations for all of their backbreaking work in keeping us going.

MATC Marvels

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter here at the college.I heard about the first few of this week's "MATC Marvels" during my daily conversations with students. They are:

Luke Matthews, anthropology instructor "is a great teacher who is always there for his students!"

Paul Morschauser, diesel instructor is "easy to get along with."

David Woolpert, math instructor is, according to several pre-algebra students, "awesome, a great teacher, terrific, wonderful, super!" WOW -- what a marvel!

Tom Wozniak, diesel instructor is "a great teacher!"

Scott Ritter, of Disability Resource Services is "very helpful."

Some other Marvels I heard about from staff and faculty members follow.

On Saturday, March 12, the Barber/Cosmetology program presented an annual cut-a-thon at the Downtown Education Center. Students and instructors put aside their regularly scheduled Saturdays to take part in a fundraiser where 28 clients received great haircuts, and all the proceeds go to the Barber Cosmetology club. The money they raised will allow them to attend hair shows and learn more in their field. What a great idea!

Eleven intrepid individuals volunteered to work the telephone bank at WHA-TV (Wisconsin Public Television) on Sunday, March 13th, from noon - 4:30 PM. They are Linda Bahr, Marilynn Bunnell (retired), Pearl Dunn, Paul Flogel, Rosanne Glick, Sandy Middleton, Patty Prihoda, Nancy Reinhardt, David Shonkwiler and Rich Wandschneider, all members of MATC's Chapter 27 of the Wisconsin Association of Career and Technical Education (WACTE).

Ken McCullough, Information Technology lead instructor, received this year's "Outstanding Service Award in Information Technology" presented by the Wisconsin Technical College System.

James "Harry" Barger, Criminal Justice (Adjunct) received the 2004 Training Officer of the Year from the Law Enforcement Training Officers' Assn.

Tom Reiter, Fire Service Instructor (Adjunct) received the 2005 Fire Instructor of the Year from the Wisconsin Society of Fire Service Instructors.

Since I cannot get everywhere and talk with everyone, I need your help. Let me know the "MATC Marvels" you encounter, and share your stories with me.

Highlights from my week:

1) We kicked off the week with 10 area high schools participating in MathFest 2005 and Pi Day. I had an opportunity to meet students from Baraboo, Jefferson, Madison East, Madison LaFollette, Madison Memorial, Madison West, Middleton, Montello, Reedsburg and Sauk Prairie High Schools. MathFest featured math-related presentations, a high school math competition, poster competition and a pie eating contest in honor of Pi Day. We salute MATC's mathematicians Jeganathan "Sri" Sriskandarajah, Flynn Dustrud, Pam Larson, Kevin Mirus and Dave Sarocka for going above and beyond the call of duty to give our students the ultimate in math education. Jeff Peronto and the MATC Jazz Ensemble performed in the student lounge as part of the event. Wonderful music!

2) Tuesday morning David Shonkwiler, dean of the Agriscience, Apprenticeship, Technical and Industrial Division (AAT&I), gave me a tour of the wings of AAT&I as well as the Biotech lab, Vet Tech, Architectural Tech and Printing. I would like to thank the instructors I met for letting me interrupt their classes! They are Laurie Angel, Janneke Baske, Scott Baxter, Bob Brown, Mark Durkee, Bob Gray, Jim Grenzow, Dave Heinzen, Tim Hoege, Tom Kaminski, Rod Kohlhepp, Craig Lathrop, Lonnie Lingard, Jerry Mahun, Steve Mishler, Patrick Molzahn, John Palacios, Patty Prihoda, CC Sheldon, Kim Sprecher, David Stuber, Tony Stude, Harley Vangen, Greg Weier, Louise Whittaker, Steve Wilcox and Tom Wosniak. I got to meet David's top notch staff members Jean Karls, Ruth Schreiner and Carol Willson. It was also a pleasure meeting a 33-year MATC veteran, recently retired, Jim Miller. He has returned to not only teach but to be a student as well! Many thanks to David Shonkwiler for the educational tour.

3) Over 100 MATC faculty and staff wholeheartedly sponsored gift baskets for MATC single parents. Several of them also assembled and distributed the gift baskets on Monday and Tuesday. I helped out on Tuesday and it was heartwarming to meet with the wonderful, hard working, dedicated single parents.

4) I attended last week's MATC Wellness Committee meeting. I'm very enthusiastic that we have a group committed to promoting health and wellness of our employees. I'm thinking about riding my bike to work this summer, and I'm trying to get to the Fitness Center as much as I can --which is not very often so far!

5) On Wednesday, I had an introductory meeting with Dale Hopkins, executive director of the State of Wisconsin Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin.

6) I met with Cheryl Fliege, director of Marketing and Communication Services at Illinois Community College. Cheryl will be studying MATC's organization for her doctoral dissertation.

7) It was an early start Thursday morning with the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce Board meeting where I reported on our health care programs.

8) Thursday afternoon was the quarterly meeting of Leadership Council, which includes all administrators, administrative staff and union presidents here at the college. It was great to see all of these folks in person at the same time and place! I shared with them more about myself and how I make difficult decisions. Before I can make a decision, I often consider values that have served me well for many years. I want everyone at MATC to know that when I have to make a difficult decision these are some things I consider:

• I value truth and loyalty, but truth is more important than loyalty.
• The good of the long-term usually outweighs the good of the short-term.
• I value justice and mercy, but in the end, justice must be more important than mercy.
• I consider the good of the individual and the community, but the greater good of our students and the community is most important.

As I told the Leadership Council, I am considering some reorganization at the executive level. I have been meeting with organizational consultants to help me get perspective and expert advice on this and I plan to keep the college informed every step of the way.

9) I rounded out the week getting to know Terry Gulmire, director of Facilities, and Eugene Fujimoto, diversity coordinator/affirmative action officer.

Hope you are having a great Spring Break week -- whether that means you're on vacation or working hard at MATC. I'll be here all week working to support our fabulous staff, faculty and students!

Student Space Work Team Conducting Online Survey
The Student Space Work Team is currently conducting an online survey regarding student space at all locations across the district. The group is interested in getting as much feedback as possible in order to begin a college-wide project to assess student space. The survey will take only about 5 minutes to complete and will be live between March 15 and April 1.

Click on the survey now.

After the surveys have been collected, the architecture firm Kahler-Slater will help a group of 75 student leaders and members from the campus community develop a more concrete vision for improving student space. They will be looking into the feasibility of a student center at Truax and other long-term improvements to all our facilities that can make all campuses warm and welcoming for students.

As this initiative progresses, the work team will keep the college community informed of happenings.

"Other Funding"
Calling all faculty and staff! Are you finding yourself wishing for more dollars for learning projects in your department? Do you feel that you have some projects that are worthy of financial support from private foundations?

For those of you who haven't done any fundraising and aren't clear about what makes private foundations different from other types of funding entities, here's a definition: A private foundation is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization with funds (usually from a single source, such as an individual, family, or corporation) and programs managed by its own trustees or directors. The funds are program are established to maintain or aid social educational, religious, or other charitable activities serving the common welfare, primarily through the making of grants.

The MATC Foundation is compiling a resource guide that can help you. We have perused the directory of Foundations in Wisconsin and printed profiles of those foundations that have indicated an interest in at least one of the two things MATC is all about: Access to learning and economic development.

We will make this resource guide available to any interested faculty or staff member provided that you help coordinate our efforts by agreeing to do the following.

1. Contact the MATC Foundation Office for information about a foundation prospect. Together we'll determine the feasibility of cultivating the foundation in question for a specific project. The two primary factors affecting feasibility are MATC's current relationship (if any) with the foundation and whether or not another faculty or staff member is already working with the foundation on a request.

2. When we agree that you will approach a specific foundation, you will submit a grant proposal or application to the foundation by the foundation's next deadline. If you do not solicit the foundation by the next deadline, the MATC Foundation will work with the faculty or staff member who is "next in line" to approach the foundation.

3. You'll provide a copy of the grant proposal or application materials to the MATC Foundation.

4. As you work on the grant proposal or application, you'll contact the MATC Foundation for any resources or assistance you may need.

To sign up to receive an external foundation resource guide, email sfowles@matcmadison.edu.

What an event!! What was that? Oh, it was the 2005 Annual MATC Bowling Sweeper. When did it happen? - March 5, 2005
This year, 97 of your friends, colleagues and neighbors bowled. Just like in year's past, those who bowled, or just came to watch, had a great time.

High scratch games went to Linda Fehd (218) and Don Gannon (279, 650). High female series went to Mary Rapp (535), Sue Padron, Chandra Kleinsmith, Mary Erbs, Donna Marconnet, Pat Russell, Ellen Vervoort, Connie Dreger, Kim Klinkner, and D'Ann Zickert. Male series went to Terry Dunn (661), Jim Justman, Tom Gannon, Russell Dunn, Mark Dohm, Wes Marquardt, Mike Panten, Brad Kahn, Kevin Allegar and Paul Robbins.

Little Timmy went to Jean Gendreau from the Portage Campus, with Little Tammy going to Adam Bushcott from the Truax Cafeteria. Congratulations to all and thank you for helping make it a great day.

Special thanks to Mike Panten and Mary Rapp for the work they did in making this a memorable Bowling Sweeper; and for all they do for the students, faculty and staff.

Thank You
I like to say what I consider a long over due "thank you" to the many people who have supported my family and I over the past few weeks and months. While my Mother's health was suffering, many throughout MATC helped comfort me with support both here for my work and with prayers and kind words of encouragement.

As my Mother passed away in February, I saw the outpouring of prayers, sympathy and emotions from so many people. When I returned to work, I was over-whelmed by the cards and gifts that my family and I received; we will use them to support Hospice and the nursing home where Mom spent the last 7 months. She really enjoyed the people at the nursing home who went out of their way to make her comfortable while she stayed there. As her and Dad always said, "The family extended way beyond our kids."

Thank you once again for your support, your kindness and your comforting words and prayers. It has been truly appreciated. - Mick Conners

Need Some News to Warm Your Heart in Chilly March?
How about this: The MATC Foundation's Faculty-Staff Campaign has seen a 5% increase in the total number of faculty and staff donors during the current fiscal year (and the current fiscal year isn't over until June 30!). Among our full-time staff, an incredible 35% are supporting the MATC Foundation Faculty-Staff Campaign. To date, as a staff, we have raised nearly $40,000 to support vital funds at the Foundation.

Here is a note from a student scholarship recipient received in the Foundation Office:

Thank you very much for the opportunity to win a scholarship for Spring Semester 2005. This scholarship will help me achieve my career goals of being a computer engineer. Currently, I am a full-time student and also work full-time. I have a wife and a three-month-old daughter. This award will help relieve the financial burden we have while trying to raise a family and finish school. Again, I truly thank you for your generosity.

If you'd like to sign up to support the Faculty-Staff Campaign, complete this form. If you have any questions about the campaign, please call Sarah Fowles, the Faculty-Staff Campaign Coordinator, at 243-4334.
