WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,As I write this, it is snowing and it's almost the middle of March! Does it ever stop snowing in Wisconsin? I heard a great term for light snows in Wisconsin on the weather program the other night. The meteorologist called this kind of snow a "nuisance" snow as compared to "fun" snow where we can play winter sports - - and sometimes even close school!
MATC Marvels
Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter here at the college. I heard about this week's "MATC Marvels" during my daily conversations with students. They are:
A student with a dazzling smile said, "Ms. (Tammy) Downing is an awesome teacher!"
One student said, "I knew I wanted to teach history, but Christine Cina helped me focus on what I really wanted to teach - indigenous history."
Referring to a speech instructor, one student said, "Patti Huber is an excellent teacher. She gives me confidence."
"Sandy Loman is wonderful", and "Jon Pollack is tough, but good" from another student.
Please join me in congratulating the MATC men's basketball team: Josh Baysinger, Rykker Erickson, Jason Flowers, Justin Hustad, Jacob Keller, Blake Kuchta, Zach Lindert, Trevor Newman, Nick Ramsden, Caleb Turzinski, Brandon Watkins, Leslie Wilkinson, and Jeff Wood. The team has a stellar overall record of 27-7 claiming the Wisconsin Technical College Conference title. Three players were named all-conference including: Jeff Wood (First Team), Jason Flowers and Blake Kuchta (Second Team). Second-year player, Jeff Wood, a former Stoughton High School athlete also received all-state and all-region honors. You are all champions! Thank you for the wonderful season!
When the Joint Finance Committee chose Watertown for the first in its series of budget hearings, we thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase MATC's vital role in responding to local economic needs. MATC student Betsy Ebert stepped up to the plate and, after waiting for several hours to testify at last week's hearing, shared her story of being laid off at the Perry Judd printing plant in Waterloo and retraining for a new career in electronics at MATC. Watertown campus administrator Lyn Hertel, who accompanied her, reports that Betsy did a great job of showing the committee the personal impact their budget decisions will have. As Betsy put it: "Why freeze the funding for MATC, who is working very hard to benefit employers, employees and the community as a whole? Please, don't jeopardize our futures. Keep up the funding for MATC."
Another MATC success is our Business Technology department's online Administrative Assistant degree. It has current enrollment of over 160 students from over 25 states as well as Canada, the Bahamas and Jamaica. An online student from Pennsylvania says, "The online courses fit very well with my busy life-style and I enjoy them tremendously." Congratulations to Gerri Wicklund, the originator of the idea and Paula Suominen (retired) and Sue Schwerdtfeger (retired) for assisting Gerri to get the ball rolling. Great job!
The State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections held a two-hour broadcast at MATC about the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Dick Shold, Associate Dean/Health, Human and Protective Services Division, was responsible for facilitating arrangements for the broadcast. I received a letter from the Department of Corrections expressing their appreciation to Dick and MATC for the support and assistance they received in scheduling this broadcast. To learn about the Prison Rape Elimination Act, visit http://nicic.org/WebGateway_54.htm.
Since I cannot get everywhere and talk with everyone (though I'm trying), I need your help. Let me know the "MATC Marvels" you encounter, and share your stories with me.
Highlights from my week:
1) I've met individually this week with MATC District Board Member Darnella Mosley. Though Darnella has rendered her resignation from our board, effective July 1, I appreciate the time she took to visit with me. It is unfortunate that her professional obligations are forcing her to resign, as she is a competent and effective board member who is really committed to the success of our students.
2) I served on a panel with Art Rainwater, superintendent of Madison public schools, and John Matthews, executive director of Madison Teachers Inc. The purpose of the panel was to brief the media on the importance of the "Spring Out The Vote" efforts, a campaign to encourage county voters to learn more about the K-12 education issues that will be on April's ballot.
3) I attended the League for Innovation annual conference last weekend and participated in a presentation with my former colleagues from Hawkeye Community College on "A College and Community Approach to Providing Campus Based Student Health Services," and attended Sandy Philip's excellent presentation on student learning outcomes.
4) Our students in the Business Professionals of America Club received several awards and were recognized for their achievements at the State Leadership Conference held in Appleton, WI February 24-27. Please join me in congratulating Mandy Cysiewski, Jason Duzeski, Valerie Ellis, Heidi Freson, Leonie Kuissick, Gerardo Pina, Arturo Quechol, and Erika Sommers for their individual awards and/or honorable mentions. A summary of student awards can be accessed by clicking here. We are very proud of these students' involvement and their accomplishments. Club advisor, Mark Finger, is an exceptional educator and professional. He devotes much time and energy into making this organization a personally and professionally rewarding experience for each of the members. Thank you, Mark, for all your contributions to this organization.
5) At Wednesday's board meeting, Timothy Twohill and Phi Theta Kappa students Alicia Erickson (Vice President-Scholarship), Marilyn Thielman (new Phi Theta Kappa member), Bob Van Deurzen, Adrienne Smith, and Kally Fenske celebrated their most recent awards with the board. To recap, the awards won included Distinguished Chapter, honorable mention for Service Hallmark Essay, and an honorable mention for Yearbook. In addition, Beta Beta Psi received a Five-Star rating for the fifth year in a row, the highest rating that a chapter can achieve with MATC being the only five-star chapter among Wisconsin's sixteen chapters. And, Kally Fenske won the Distinguished Chapter Officer Award. By the way, in last week's message I left out two Phi Theta Kappa advisors, Keith Cornille and Rocio Martinez. Please know that your time and effort is recognized and very much appreciated.
6) Another highlight from the board meeting was the demonstration by the board of MATC's commitment to diversity. Diversity is important for us to sustain a learning environment built on respect for the unique experiences and potential for all.
7) On Thursday morning our deans and I participated in a meeting hosted by the MATC Foundation to focus on relationship-building with potential donors. I was impressed with the reactive and cooperative ideas they had for increasing gifts for program needs.
8) The Foundation also hosted Susan Schmitz, executive director of Downtown Madison, Inc. for a wonderful gourmet lunch served by our culinary program students and chefs.
9) My meeting with Paul Gabriel, executive director of the Wisconsin Technical College System District Boards Association, gave me a deeper insight into our state legislators and the vital importance of an active advocacy.
10) The 16 technical college presidents held their monthly meeting hosted by Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville which I attended on Friday bfore getting back to Madison for the MATC Performing Arts Friday presentation of the comedy You Can't Take It With You.
11) As I mentioned last week, the MATC Marketing Club attended the Wisconsin Marketing and Management Association for State Career Leadership Conference March 3rd - 5th at the Madison Concourse Hotel. I welcomed the students to Madison at their general opening session on Thursday, March 3. It was a banner weekend with twenty-seven students qualifying to attend the Delta Epsilon Chi International Career Development Conference in May of 2005 in Anaheim, California. MATC placed first in five categories and second in another five of the competition categories. Holly Feldbruegge, a marketing student was also elected to the WWMA State Officer Team. She will hold the position of Southwest Region Vice President. Well done and congrats to the MATC team.
Very soon the Student Space Work Team will be asking all faculty, staff and students to take a voluntary online survey about student space at all locations across the college. The team is trying to get as much feedback as possible as they begin a college-wide project to assess student space. After the surveys have been collected in early April, the architecture firm Kahler-Slater will help a group of 75 student leaders and members from the campus community develop a more concrete vision for improving student space. They will be exploring the feasibility of a student center at Truax and other long-term improvements to all our facilities to make our campuses warm and welcoming for students. I'm very excited about this project and wanted to make you aware that you or your students are encouraged to participate by taking the online survey that will be offered between March 15 and April 1. Look for more information coming to your inboxes soon.
Have a great "week before break week", and I hope the comp teachers aren't staying up all night grading papers!

Need Some News to Warm Your Heart in Chilly March?
How about this: The MATC Foundation's Faculty-Staff Campaign has seen a 5% increase in the total number of faculty and staff donors during the current fiscal year (and the current fiscal year isn't over until June 30!). Among our full-time staff, an incredible 35% are supporting the MATC Foundation Faculty-Staff Campaign. To date, as a staff, we have raised nearly $40,000 to support vital funds at the Foundation. Here is a note from a student scholarship recipient received in the Foundation Office:
Thank you very much for the opportunity to win a scholarship for Spring Semester 2005. This scholarship will help me achieve my career goals of being a computer engineer. Currently, I am a full-time student and also work full-time. I have a wife and a three-month-old daughter. This award will help relieve the financial burden we have while trying to raise a family and finish school. Again, I truly thank you for your generosity.
If you'd like to sign up to support the Faculty-Staff Campaign, complete this form. If you have any questions about the campaign, please call Sarah Fowles, the Faculty-Staff Campaign Coordinator, at 243-4334.

Thank Yous
I'd like to say "Thank You" to all of you who have kept me in your thoughts and prayers through cards, flowers and gifts during my recent hospital stay and recuperation at home. I looked at the cards and flowers many times during recovery and thought how special each and every one of you is to me. A very special thanks to: Kimi Conners and Gladys McKay for taking quick action and getting me to the hospital; to Karyn German (whom I've yet to meet) for helping me get through the time while waiting for the emergency medical technicians; to Karen Gretschmann, Tonya Vertein and Gladys McKay for doing my work during the past 8 weeks; and to the rest of the Bursar's office staff for their care and understanding. The friendship all of you have shown is kept deep within my heart! See you soon! - Terry WermuthThank you for the comforting words, sympathy and hospice memorial gifts on the recent death of my mother, Madeleine Knight. When she was in her early fifties, she completed a clerk-typist program at Western Wisconsin Technical College in LaCrosse and was subsequently hired by the WWTC Instructional Support Services Division, working there until her retirement. From her interactions and relationships with GED and ESL students, instructors and staff, she had a particular understanding of the unique and significant role technical colleges can have in the lives of so many diverse students. Thank you again for your concern and kindness. It is deeply appreciated. - Mary Knight

Learning Programs Administrative Staff Update
As you are aware, the college is moving into a time of change with numbers of planned retirements to take place over the next few years. To assist with that transition and provide stability and consistency in their areas of responsibility, Terry Webb (Executive Dean for Learning Programs) and Jody Thrush Withers (Administrative Dean of Arts and Sciences) have agreed to continue in their respective roles for the foreseeable future. Both Terry and Jody have provided exceptional leadership over the last several years and have been instrumental in building college-wide systems and processes to advance the quality of student learning and success. --Rose Ann Findlen, Provost for Learning****************
