WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON

President's Message

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Here it is the beginning of week nine in the semester, and students are getting tense. I hope this message finds you well, eager for the warmer weather and Spring Break!

MATC Marvels

Each week, I like to highlight some marvelous people I encounter here at the college.

I heard about this week's "MATC Marvels" during my daily conversations with students. They are: Bill Colby, history instructor; Jeff Quinlin, accounting instructor; and Ron Dunbar, economics instructor. All three, their students tell me, are outstanding teachers. I also met two DTEC students who say they love all of their instructors!

Since I cannot get everywhere and talk with everyone, I need your help. Let me know the "MATC Marvels" you encounter, and share your stories with me.

Highlights from my week:

1) I've met individually this week with district board member Jim Cavanaugh. Again, our board members' willingness to make time for MATC business is a good example of the time and energy these volunteers commit to our college.

2) Our Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, Beta Beta Psi, received several awards at the Minn-Wi-Kota Regional Convention held last weekend, including 1st Place Distinguished Chapter, 2nd Place Service Hallmark, 2nd Place Yearbook, and the 5 Star Rating for the 5th year in a row. I have been at two colleges, one that received the Phi Theta Kappa 5 star rating and one that didn't, and I know from experience how difficult it is to achieve that award. Congratulations to our Phi Theta Kappa students and advisors Doug Kirchberg and Timothy Twohill who brought that honor to us. Special congratulations to Kally Fenske for being named Distinguished Chapter Officer. Way to go, Kally!

3) Earlier this week, MATC had a very unique visitor in Eduard Melnikau, a journalist from Belarus. He is working on reforming media in Belarus, where, for many years, journalists have worked under strict censorship restraints. Mr. Melnikau is visiting the United States to learn how a free press works. He stopped by my office and then visited journalism students and even watched the staff of The Clarion in action.

4) I visited the State Capitol and got the chance to see the Assembly Chamber, Supreme Court, a glimpse of the Governor's Office, and hearing rooms. This was my first visit and I was amazed by its size and beauty. At the State Capitol in Iowa, visitors must pass through airport-like security upon entering the Capitol. In great contrast are the open doors and easy entrance to the Capitol here in Madison. You can really feel the electricity as you walk around the Capitol. As I was leaving downtown, I stopped at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and saw the statue of MATC's very own board member Don Heiliger.

5) I received a letter from Rayovac expressing their gratitude for the efforts of MATC's Business Procurement Assistance Center (BPAC), in particular contract specialist, Ann Johns. Besides assisting Rayovac in providing data and services, BPAC's work has resulted in an increase of federal dollars to the State of Wisconsin. To learn more about BPAC, visit http://matcmadison.edu/bpac/home.htm

6) I invited a UW guest to join me for a delicious lunch at the Gourmet Dining Room, where I met Paul Short, chef instructor. Our culinary students do a tremendous job, and it makes me so proud to think that top-notch restaurants all over Madison are staffed with MATC graduates. To learn more about the Gourmet Dining Room, visit http://matcmadison.edu/gourmet/

7) I had the opportunity to welcome the enterprising students from across the state who were in Madison to attend the Wisconsin Marketing and Management Association State Career Leadership Conference at the Concourse. To learn more about this association, visit http://www.wmma-dex.org/

8) Our district recently received credit ratings for our debt service from Moody's Investor Services and Standard and Poor's. I am happy to announce that for the seventh straight year, we received the highest ratings available (Aaa and AAA) from both agencies and even received positive comments on strong fiscal management and budgetary prudence.

Remember to hang in there. Spring Break is coming soon!

-- Bettsey
