WEEKLY DEADLINE : WEDNESDAY AT NOON |
Dear Faculty and Staff,My first week at MATC was a blitz as the "Look and Listen" tour allowed me to visit our many sites in an attempt to meet as many of you as possible in one week. Since that time, I've been learning about the college, the community, the state system and, of course, monitoring the national scene. However, I've not been communicating with you directly.
Now that my initial whirlwind introduction is over, I plan to keep you up to date with news from the President's Office, the MATC District Board and other information through regular messages in the Staff Bulletin, emailed to you every Monday.
Within the next month or so, I hope my messages will become part of a new and expanded employee news webpage, which will be updated daily and provide an effective online source of news, announcements, events and information for all employees of MATC. Hopefully this will funnel all of the varied announcements now sent via "GW_All" to one information vehicle.
Based upon recommendations from the Internal Communications Work Team, Cayce Dumont, our Internal Communications Specialist, recently joined the college to focus solely on our internal communication needs. Thanks to the work of this team and the leadership of Dr. Rosie Findlen, we hope you will be seeing many improvements in internal communications over the next several months.
MATC Marvels
Below are some "MATC Marvels" I learned about during my daily conversations with students last week:"The whole Barber-Cos Department is awesome!"
"I can't tell you my favorite teacher because they are all wonderful."
Besides comments from students, the steamfitters Local 601 and the Department of Workforce Development Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards representatives told me how good our apprenticeship training is.
In addition to last week's board meeting, I've met individually with district board members John Ashley, Jerry McGowan and Carousel Bayrd. Their willingness to make time for MATC business several times in one week is a good example of the time and energy these volunteers commit to our college.
Since I cannot get everywhere and talk with everyone, I need your help. Let me know the "MATC Marvels" you encounter and share your stories with me.
Highlights
Here are some highlights from the last two weeks' activities:
1) The Annual Community College Legislative Summit in Washington D.C. went well. Each February, representatives from MATC attend this summit with community colleges from across the nation to learn the latest on national higher education policy and to build relationships and lobby for funding and other support with our federal legislators. Board members John Ashley, Carousel Bayrd, Don Heiliger, Jerry McGowan, and Rose Williams, along with Bill Graf, MATC External Communications and Advocacy Coordinator, and I met with Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and the staff of Senators Kohl and Feingold. We also heard from First Lady Laura Bush and new Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling. One of the more thrilling experiences during the conference was eating dinner on Monday evening (Valentine's Day) just a few feet from Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton! It just so happened that the Clintons decided to dine at the same restaurant as some of our Wisconsin delegation. To learn more about the Legislative Summit, visit http://www.acct.org.
2) John Ashley and I were speakers at the Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony on Wednesday evening, February 16. It was inspiring to see so many MATC students achieving this special recognition. To learn more about Phi Theta Kappa, visit http://www.matcmadison.edu/matc/studentresources/organizations/phitheta.shtm
3) The MATC Foundation received a bequest of $62,000 last week from the estate of Alice Hake, a resident of Fort Atkinson. As stipulated in her will, Ms. Hake's gift will be used for scholarships to assist students studying business at the Fort Atkinson campus. To learn more about the MATC Foundation, visit http://www.matcmadison.edu/matc/alumni/foundation/.
4) Go WolfPack! MATC Basketball &endash; both men and women &endash; won the Wisconsin Technical College Conference and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIII and XIII-B Tournaments to be held March 4-5. Women's individual honors include: All Conference Katie Vossekuil and Erin Voelker and All State Lauren Lanza and Katie Vossekuil. Individual honors for the men include: All Conference Jeff Wood (first team), Jason Flowers and Blake Kuchta (second team) and All State Jeff Wood. Learning Programs Administrative Staff Update
As you are aware, the college is moving into a time of change with numbers of planned retirements to take place over the next few years. To assist with that transition and provide stability and consistency in their areas of responsibility, Terry Webb (Executive Dean for Learning Programs) and Jody Thrush Withers (Administrative Dean of Arts and Sciences) have agreed to continue in their respective roles for the foreseeable future. Both Terry and Jody have provided exceptional leadership over the last several years and have been instrumental in building college-wide systems and processes to advance the quality of student learning and success. --Rose Ann Findlen, Provost for Learning****************
