General Information

The Devi Bhargava Memorial Fund was established at MATC through the MATC Foundation. The fund endows two awards: An opportunity grant in the amount of $500 for a graduating student with a disability and a recognition to a staff member who demonstrates special understanding and support for students with disabilities.
Each year we solicit the help of MATC faculty and staff in nominating a student with a disability who either graduated in December or is graduating in Spring who you think has:
  • overcome substantial barriers during his/her academic career;
  • has worked at being a successful self-advocate;
  • has achieved academic success;
  • has contributed to an understanding of the issues surrounding disabilities either on a one-on-one basis or with a larger audience.

    When nominating someone, we would like you to consider the above factors as well as giving us one or two examples of why you think the student you are nominating best exemplifies the outlined characteristics.
    Names of nominees can be sent to: mfayram@matcmadison.edu. The deadline for submission of names is March 12.
    Thank you for your help!

    Dialogue Sessions with Vice President, Strategic Effectiveness
    Dialogue sessions will be held with Becky Baumbach, Vice President of Strategic Effectiveness at the Truax campus on the following dates:  Friday, March 5 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and March 24 from 11:30 a.m.-12:20 p.m.  Both sessions will be held in the Board Room (2B).  A third session in the early evening will be scheduled in the very near future.
    Sessions are also scheduled for each of our regional sites as follows:

  • March 3, 3:00-4:00pm, Portage Campus
  • March 10, 1:00-2:00pm, Downtown Education Center
  • April 2, 9:30-10:30am, Reedsburg Campus
  • April 5, 3:30-4:30pm, Watertown Campus
  • April 7, 1:30-2:30pm, Fort Atkinson Campus
    These sessions provide an opportunity for Becky to answer any questions staff may have or discuss topics related to strategic planning, assessment of student learning outcomes, LSQIP, AQIP, environmental scanning or any continuous improvement effort at the college.  There is no formal presentation, just time to communicate about things on your mind concerning the college's direction and improvement efforts.  We hope to see you!

    CONGRATULATIONS

    MATC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa left its regional convention last weekend with some outstanding awards.  They are based on achievement in the development of Phi Theta Kappa's four hallmarks&emdash;scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.  There are 49 chapters that can compete in the four state region that includes Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
    English instructor, Tim Twohill won the Horizon Award for being the most outstanding new advisor.  This is an amazing accomplishment given that Tim has been an advisor for a little over one year.  Our Wisconsin Regional representative, Lorelei Ganshert, won the award for being the most outstanding member in the whole region.  What an honor, considering the thousands of students and advisors in the region.  Beta Beta Psi was again elected to represent the state of Wisconsin at all regional and international meetings.   Chapters of Phi Theta Kappa are ranked on a Five Star system and MATC's Beta Beta Psi was once again the only Five Star Chapter in Wisconsin.  The chapter won a Distinguished Chapter award and was ranked third of the forty-nine chapters. This competition is based on projects, programs and essay competition.  The stipend Beta Beta Psi won will send one member to the International Convention in Minneapolis this spring.  Beta Beta Psi also won the award for the best yearbook in the region.  You can check it out in room 131 Truax.  It took a great group effort to leave the convention with these awards.  Here are some of the officers that played a major role:
    Chapter President, Serafin Ortega
    Wisconsin Regional Representative, Lorelei Ganshert
    Vice President of Communications, Sue Trattles
    Vice President of Fellowship, Nancy Roeder
    Webmaster, Don Gable
    Vice President of Leadership, Charles Rupp
    Vice President of Service, Ryan Vorce
    Submitted by Ken Kowalski, Chapter Advisor

    Congratulations to Terrie Thorstad from our DoITS staff! On February 19 Terrie was presented the Patriot award, which is given to employers who go above and beyond in their support of the National Guard and Reserve. This is a national honor and is given to Terrie for her continuing support of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. MATC has also been submitted for the 2004 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 by Secretary of Defense William Perry under the auspices of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The award was created to publicly recognize American employers who provide exceptional support to their employees who voluntarily serve the nation in the National Guard and Reserve. The award is the highest in a series of ESGR awards that include the Patriot Award, the Above and Beyond Award, and the Pro Patria Award.  Congrats again to Terrie and MATC!

    MATC's Local Chapter of WACTE (Wisconsin Association for Career and Technical Education) also received many awards last week. The WACTE annual conference was held at the Marriott Madison West on Feb. 18-20. At the awards program Carl Brice was awarded the Professional Excellence--Loyalty Member award, Linda Bahr won the Professional Excellence--Associate Member award, Ed Clarke was nominated for the Professional Excellence Career and Technical Administrator award and Sue Buboltz was nominated for the Professional Excellence Career and Technical Teacher--Full-Time award. Four of our staff members received the George Hambrecht award which is presented to WACTE members who have served at least 25 years in career and technical education and have been members of WACTE for the past five consecutive years. Congrats to Joen Bilse, Jan Bush, Lynn Goetsch and Pat Prihoda for receiving this award.
    MATC's Local Chapter won the traveling trophy for having the most attendees at the conference. Thank you to the following individuals that served as delegates: Linda Bahr, Sue Buboltz, Pearl Dunn, John Kinsler, Sharon Raimondo, Nancy Reinhardt, Richard Schneider, Dave Shonkwiler and Rochelle Wanner. Also, thank you to Pearl Dunn, Nancy Reinhardt and Dave Shonkwiler for serving on the Conference Planning Committee, and a special thanks to Pearl Dunn and Pat Prihoda for your hard work in taking care of the hospitality receptions.
    On Thursday evening there was a performance by an ensemble of the UW Marching Band,  which was outstanding. This year our closing keynote speaker was Michael Leckron, UW Professor and Band Director. Our current WACTE State President is Warren Hillmer, former MATC Associate Dean of Marketing and our Local Chapter President is Richard Schneider, Civil Engineer instructor.   Thanks to all who helped make this conference a success!  Mark your calendars for the following upcoming events: April 1, 2004, Legislative Seminar, Inn on the Park, Madison; July 21 & 22, 2004, Support Staff Conference, Hotel Mead, Wisconsin Rapids and the 69th Annual Conference, February 16-18, 2005, Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, Appleton.
