MATC To Hold Series of Events
and Activities to Remember September 11
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will hold a series of events and
activities as part of its "September 11th Remembered: A Day of Reflection,
A Future of Civic Involvement" plans. Most activities will be held
in both the Truax Student Lounge and Downtown Education Center 2nd Floor
Atrium.
Reflections Activities
- A moment of silence held
at noon at all campuses;
- A display of the scrolls
that recorded student and employee messages and comments from the MATC
Vigils held last year following the terrorist attacks;
- An opportunity for individuals
to reflect on how they and their lives have changed in the past year
by recording their thoughts and feelings as part of a new reflection
document;
A photo display and insights from Cathie Marty, MATC staff member, who
was in New York on September 11th and witnessed one of the planes as
it flew into the World Trade Center;
- A multi-media presentation
produced by HBO entitled, "In Memoriam: New York City 9/11,"
shown continuously throughout the day;
- A multi-media presentation,
developed by and through the eyes of Dr. Wiess with the American Red
Cross, who volunteered at ground zero in the aftermath of the attacks;
- A display of headlines and
articles from around the world;
- Distribution of remembrance
ribbons for individuals to wear.
A Future of Civic Involvement
Activities
- A Volunteer Fair is being
held on campus with more than 40 local community agencies encouraging
and fostering community involvement by offering individuals a variety
of volunteer opportunities. Truax First Floor Hallway 10am* 1pm;
- Introduction of the MATC
Peace Pole, an 8 foot, six-sided structure with "May Peace Prevail
on Earth" written in six languages. Truax Student Lounge.
- A list of September 11th
remembrance activities taking place throughout the greater Dane County
area will be available to encourage individuals to participate in their
local community activities and foster a connection and involvement where
they live. The lists will be available in the Truax Student Lounge,
DTEC 2nd floorAtrium. The list will also be published in the Student
Bulletin and on the MATC Student Life Webpage.
MATC is one of the largest
of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges and serves approximately
50,000 individuals annually. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of
technical, liberal arts and science, college transfer, adult basic education
and life enrichment studies, as well as customized employee training.
MATC serves all or parts of 12 counties located throughout south central
Wisconsin.
