MATC Cancels Friday Afternoon/Evening
Classes and Holds "Remembrance Vigils" to Participate in National
Observance
Madison Area Technical College
(MATC) has announced it will cancel all Friday afternoon and evening classes
at all campuses starting at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, to participate
in the "National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of
the Terrorist Attacks" proclaimed on Thursday by President George
W. Bush.
MATC will hold "Remembrance Vigils" for its students and employees
at its Truax and Downtown Education Center locations in Madison. The vigils
will be open for drop-in visitation between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The
vigil at the Truax campus will be held in the Mitby Theater. Similar events
at the colleges four regional campuses will be announced locally.
"The vigils will provide a time of silence for our college community
to honor and respect our nations victims and reflect upon the traumatic
events of this week," stated Ed Clarke, MATCs vice president
of Instructional Services. He explained participants in the vigils will
have the opportunity to sign a remembrance book for the victims.
While college offices and services will remain open for the entire day,
faculty and staff are being invited to take time off to participate in
the vigils. For students, missed class work resulting from the canceled
classes will be made up at a later time.
In messages to MATC students and employees, Clarke stated, "We appreciate
your understanding during this extremely difficult and challenging time
and hope participation in Fridays observance helps to bring comfort
to us all as we struggle to deal with this national tragedy."
MATC serves approximately 50,000 students each year and operates campus
locations in Madison, Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg and Watertown.
