MATC PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN

Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Performing Arts brings Martin McDonagh's strange comic tale "The Cripple of Inishmaan" to our intimate black box Studio Theatre 206, located on the second floor of the Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson St. Performances are scheduled November 1-2, 7-10, and 14-16. All shows start at 8 pm.

The Cripple of Inishmaan is dark Irish comedy with a twist, set in 1934 on the barren island of Inishmaan, which has been described as "the island of mourning wind." The island is populated with people who remain endearing even at their worst moments. The inhabitants of Inishmaan find gossip and infighting a way to pass the time-a sheep with no ears and a goose biting the tail of a cat are big news. So, when Johnnypateenmike announces that Hollywood director Robert Flaherty is coming to the neighboring island to make Man of Aran, the excitement is palpable (the running gag is "Ireland mustn't be such a bad place if the Americans want to come here"). But no one wants to be in the film more than 18-year-old 'Cripple Billy' if only to escape the bitter tedium and ridicule he experiences in his daily life.

"McDonagh brings all nine of his characters to vivid life, and reveals a terrific ear for quirky dialogue," (The Daily Telegraph). "He is a born storyteller. When you feel he is getting sentimental, he hits you with a corrective shock…the dialogue fizzes, the characters crackle," (The London Times).

Martin McDonagh, born in London, but an Irishman by blood, grew up listening to the tales of his father and uncles about their native Galway. Fascinated by the language and characters, McDonagh began writing in his teens. Now, at age 31, McDonagh is the youngest playwright to have ever had four plays running simultaneously in London. His works include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, A Skull in Connemara and The Lonesome West. His plays have been honored with Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle awards.

Tickets for The Cripple of Inishmaan may be purchased by calling the Mitby Theater Box Office at (608) 243-4000. The hours are Monday through Friday, 10:30am to 4:30pm. Seating in the Studio Theatre 206 is limited, so order your tickets early.
